Book Review: Block, Delete, Move On, by LalalaLetMeExplain

LIFESTYLE: The debut hardback from Instagram sensation @lalalaletmeexplain delves into the highs and lows of modern day dating, to give raw and honest advice on topics that people are often too embarrassed or afraid to talk about.

Hysterically funny and incredibly advisory.

Yes, this is a book for the single ladies!! Specifically, single ladies who have had to date men in the modern era. Please note: the author defines the intended audience; the specificity of gender and sexual preference is not intended to exclude or invalidate other people’s experiences.

Made up of nine chapters, the book additionally features a preface, glossary, and list of resources. Each chapter has a specific focus, and the chapter titles show the absolute playfulness within which this text is written. To take one example is Chapter Seven’s “Is he worth disturbing your pH for?”

Although this book will have you in stitches, it is not at all facetious. LalalaLetMeExplain has written it from the heart, drawing from empirical and researched data. As an example, she compares sexual empowerment in experimentation to that of being pressured, as there is a massive difference between the two. She gives stories of being pressured into sex as a youth to wanting it as a woman to highlight the difference. Light-heartedly giving the reader many serious messages, the final chapter gives the most important one of all: Block, delete, move on.

Hilariously regaling stories of catastrophic dates, or of situations encountered when one is trapped in overthinking, she candidly explains the emotional roller coaster one can experience as a single lady dating in a world dictated by apps and social media. Situationships, ghosting, negging, gaslighting, and toxic relationships are just a few of the many terms she defines, using the term f–kboy often. What are the alternatives?

Block, Delete, Move On is a most empowering book that certainly makes you feel fine about being single but does inspire you to get back out there again … and again … and again … even if it has been a while. For all the ladies feeling stuck in a rut in a world where 50 percent of meeting new people is controlled by apps, we are taught about all of the pitfalls and how to avoid them. For ongoing and additional advice, she has a great podcast or Instagram account if you want to remain connected. This is, after all, how she started.

Visually appealing, this smaller-size book with shiny pages befits the content. It is jam-packed, light-humoured with occasional swearing, and the kind of book you can read in one sitting. A great gift book for all the single ladies!!!
