Fourteen iconic South Australian wines have been honoured in the top tier of The Real Review Wine Classification, showcasing the region’s stature in the Australian wine industry. Overall there were 46 wines given the 3 Merit Wine Classification, affirming their status as exemplary wines with a proven track record.
To be awarded the 3 Merit Wine status, the wines must be “Iconic wines of the country, wines of true provenance and exemplary track record. Fewer than 0.5% of wines produced achieve this tier. Most of these wines have received gold ribbons for recent vintages. Top vintages will score 98 points or more.”
The Real Review, an influential wine criticism platform, reviews approximately 10,000 wines annually from Australia and New Zealand. Its commitment to transparency and professionalism in wine reviews makes it a respected source for wine enthusiasts globally. The awarded Top Wineries Certificate is a testament to wineries that consistently produce exceptional wines, with the classification being determined by a comprehensive algorithm that analyses ratings and review recency.
South Australia’s dominance in the recently released 2024 list of top wineries is a clear indication of the region’s quality and consistency in wine production, so it’s no surprise that so many of our State’s incredible wines made the 3 Merit list.
Among the notable South Australian wines recognised include the Deviation Road Beltana Blanc de Blancs, a vintage sparkling Chardonnay from Adelaide Hills. This wine, alongside the Grosset Polish Hill Riesling from Clare Valley, exemplifies the diversity and distinctive character of South Australia’s wine regions.
Henschke Hill of Grace, a profound Shiraz from Eden Valley, and Langmeil The Freedom 1843 Old Vine Shiraz from Barossa Valley also received top honours. These wines, known for their rich history and depth, demonstrate the prowess of South Australian Shiraz on the world stage.
Penfolds Grange, arguably Australia’s most internationally acclaimed Shiraz, along with Torbreck The Laird Shiraz and Wendouree Shiraz, both also from the renowned Barossa Valley, highlight the region’s consistent quality across various producers.
Further adding to the list, Penfolds Bin 707, a powerful Cabernet Sauvignon, reflects the robust character typical of South Australian craftsmanship. Accompanying it in the cabernet category are Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra and Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard The Peake—a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from McLaren Vale.
Other Shiraz blends include Torbreck RunRig and Wolf Blass Black Label, which combine traditional Shiraz with other varieties to create complex, multi-layered wines.
Additionally, wines like Joseph The Fronti from McLaren Vale, a unique expression of the Frontignac variety, and fortified wines such as Penfolds Great Grandfather Rare Tawny and Seppeltsfield Para 100 Year Old Tawny from Barossa Valley, illustrate the rich heritage and evolving tradition of wine production in the region.
The classification by The Real Review not only elevates the global recognition of these South Australian wines but also reassures wine lovers of their outstanding quality and heritage. As these wines continue to earn accolades, they proudly carry forward South Australia’s legacy as a premier wine-producing region.
