The heart of Unley Road is set to transform into one of Adelaide’s premier retail, entertainment and residential locations.
The nine-storey development, set to begin construction within 18 months, will take place on the current site of the Target store at 166 Unley Road and will also take in the adjoining BarZaar bistro, function centre and car park.
After Unley Council endorsed the project at a meeting on Monday night, Unley Mayor Michael Hewitson said the development delivered on the council’s vision for progress that ‘cares for its past as it builds for its future.’
Set to feature an influx of national and international brand retailers, a wellness centre, medical services, a cinema and supermarket, rising above will be two towers of residential apartments.
These will be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, with prices starting from less than $400,000 for a one-bedroom on Arthur Street, up to $2 million for a premium apartment on Unley Road.
Operating and owning the site will be Optage Pty Ltd, which owns the Target site, while Catcorp Pty Ltd will jointly develop, design and build the new ‘vertical precinct.’
“Unley Central will be a magnet for young and old to make the most of life in Unley,” said Optage owner Patrick Ho.
“It is a landmark development that will literally take Unley to new levels.”
According to Catcorp Director Anthony Catinari, the development will create 300 full-time jobs long term, excluding the cinema and apartments, while the construction phase will employ 1050 full-time workers, and another 1000 jobs will be created among local retailers and suppliers.
“As a proud Unley local, I want to help create something of value in my community. Unley Central will enable Unley residents to move within Unley and enjoy a town centre that reflects what they want.”
“We are helping to design the Unley town centre for what people want when they look for somewhere to live, work, shop and feel good.”
Subject to planning approval by the State Commission Assessment Panel in the new year, construction will commence in 2022 and will take two years to complete.
