Growing up with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a life changing experience. That movie, and book, shaped my life’s expectations, hopes and dreams. Unfortunately I’ve crossed paths with too few Oompa Loompas, while meeting too many Mike TVs and Veruca Salts, but chocolate? I’ve managed to find that in abundance.
Living in South Australia seems to be better than winning a golden ticket, as our silky chocolate offerings are plentiful, with many amazing chocolate factories, shops, and experiences on offer.
While this list could go on FOR DAYS, here’s a dreamy selection of the biggest and best chocolate experiences on offer – just in time for Easter.
Located in the Barossa Valley region, just outside Tanunda, this ever-growing tourist attraction is surrounded by wonderful vineyards, which produce the grapes for Vineyard Road, also available at the cellar door. There is also an ice creamery serving freshly made gelato. The main reason people visit though, is the HUGE range of amazing chocolate!
All of the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company’s products are made in the state-of-the-art chocolate kitchen by a team of chocolatiers, where you can also get a sneak peek at how the chocolates are created through their expansive viewing windows.
And for those wanting a slightly more adult experience, the Vineyard Road cellar door, also located at the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company, offers wine and chocolate pairings.

Enjoy a scenic drive through the Adelaide Hills to visit the Melba’s Woodside Chocolate factory and view their extensive range. Melba’s Chocolates & Confectionery is a famous South Australian brand with amazing chocolate range including signature Giant Chocolate Specialities, Cow Pats and Sheep Nuts. Just Bliss is a family-owned business that specialises in creating beautifully crafted chocolates with all sorts of patterns and colours. Based in Gawler Place off Rundle Mall, this boutique chocolatier definitely creates some of the prettier chocolates on the market. Just check out their Dark Couture Chocolate Collection and try to stop your mouth from watering.

Koko Black arrived in Adelaide fairly recently, setting up shop in Adelaide Arcade off Rundle Mall. There you can enjoy daily chocolate sampling, while their team can guide you through the chocolate journey. With over 100 chocolates and counting – the Koko Black range is complex, indulgent and always adventurous. Originating from the finest Belgian couverture chocolate, each individual chocolate is meticulously handcrafted in Melbourne, using premium natural ingredients.
