Sugars Beach, Hindmarsh Island has received a $1M grant from the State Government to begin the development of a pristine eco-tourism hub.

The Council secured funding for the facelift through the State Government’s – Regional Growth Fund, ‘Opening our Great Outdoors’ funding stream, which will contribute to the $7.6M project to transform Sugars Beach and the Murray Mouth into a pristine eco-tourism hub.

The project will create a world-class tourism and educational experience including boardwalks with viewing platforms, cultural tourist hub, toilets, formalised car park, and nature play space, BBQ and picnic facilities.

This development is aimed at reinvigorating the area and will provide visitors with an experience that everyone can enjoy.

Through the proposed cultural tourist hub, the project will promote the local Ngarrindjeri cultural heritage with interpretive features and Ngarrindjeri artwork applied throughout the design.

The project will create opportunities for local business guided tours and talks at this culturally significant ‘Meeting of the Waters’ location and visitors to engage with the rich history of our local Ngarrindjeri community.

Alexandrina Council Mayor Keith Parkes is very excited about the proposed project at the River Murray Mouth at Sugars Beach, Hindmarsh Island location.

“We are very grateful for this investment by the State Government which has both social and economic outcomes for the Alexandrina region. The Sugars Beach Murray Mouth Icon Project will create a world-class tourism and recreation destination for locals and visitors to experience.

The project will complement and continue the environmental and cultural tourism journey created by current infrastructure improvements and upgrades of the Goolwa Wharf Precinct and other Coorong related tourism infrastructure.

The project is at concept design stage and subject to securing additional funding of the final design before the project will proceed further.

Community consultation and Council endorsement will be the next steps for this proposed project.
