The SA Government has approved a $2 million funding allocation for the redevelopment of Kings Reserve in Torrensville, with the ambition of transforming it into a premier community park. This announcement was made jointly by Nick Champion MP, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, and Tom Koutsantonis MP, Member for West Torrens.
This significant financial input brings the total State Government investment in the project to approximately $2.5 million. The City of West Torrens has outlined a revitalised plan for the reserve after the original plan for a Playspace upgrade experienced delays. The revised project has an estimated total cost of $8.5 million.
Located adjacent to the Thebarton Oval and opposite the Brickworks Marketplace, Kings Reserve is poised to become a central hub for both leisure and community engagement. The redesign includes enhanced landscaping featuring extensive green spaces, surrounded by trees and inclusive play areas that cater to children of various ages and abilities.
The project also plans to incorporate facilities for active recreation like basketball, netball, skateboarding, and a BMX pump track. Community amenities will include shelters, BBQ areas, public toilets, and seating to support local gatherings. In a nod to cultural heritage, the design will integrate elements of Kaurna culture through interpretive signage and sculptures, along with an arbour that symbolises significant local waterways and transport paths. An additional feature will be a red brick wall that pays homage to the area’s history of brick-making.
Nick Champion spoke about the government’s commitment to fostering vibrant community spaces, saying “Our Government is passionate about supporting vibrant, connected neighbourhoods and providing outdoor spaces that will get kids off their screens.” He added that the project’s emphasis on nature, culture, and physical activity will establish Kings Reserve as a key destination in the Inner-Western Suburbs, praising the West Torrens council for their visionary approach.
Tom Koutsantonis focused on the local community’s role in advocating for the park’s development. “This is another great win for the local community, and I commend the many residents who live in the 5031 postcode who have achieved great things as they advocated strongly and passionately for this vital shared space,” he said.
Mayor Michael Coxon of the City of West Torrens said, “We are grateful to the State Government for its financial contribution to this project under its Open Space Fund.” Following recent positive community feedback on the master plan, detailed design processes are underway, with construction expected to commence in early 2026.
