2 SA spots ranked among the best new restaurants in regional Australia by Gourmet Traveller

Gourmet Traveller recently named the best new restaurants in regional Australia, and out of the six selected, two standouts come from South Australia.

Gourmet Traveller, Australia’s premier luxury food magazine, recently named the best new restaurants and bars around the country, including the best new eateries in regional Australia. Out of the six selected, two standouts come from South Australia: Temperance Restaurant in Renmark and LVN Restaurant in the Adelaide Hills – and it’s not hard to see why.

The other four notable spots on the list included Byron Bay Oyster Bar, Sefa Kitchen in Byron Bay, Harkham in the Hunter Valley, and Rowlee Wines in Orange.

Temperance Restaurant – Renmark

Located in the heart of the Riverland at Hotel Renmark, Temperance Restaurant has a strong emphasis on European fine dining and a ‘farm-to-table’ philosophy. The restaurant, led by Head Chef Anthony Cresp, Executive Chef Hugh Hazelwood, and Restaurant Manager Mel Hamilton, stands out for its dedication to local produce and a creative, seasonal menu.

With a focus on traditional European cooking and foraging, the team showcases the rich bounty of the Murray Mouth region. Hugh, who returned to Renmark after working in hatted UK restaurants, joined forces with his schoolmate Anthony, a passionate forager, to create a menu that brings together foraged ingredients with regional produce.

The restaurant’s vibe is relaxed yet elegant, with a 1920s-inspired interior featuring plush furnishings and soft lighting. The team also adds a personal touch by sharing the stories behind each dish with diners, enhancing the experience.

The name “Temperance” pays homage to the alcohol prohibition movement in Renmark during the 1800s, a nod to the Chaffey brothers and the dry town they established – a playful and historical reference that compliments the restaurant’s concept.

LVN Restaurant – Adelaide Hills

LVN Restaurant, located at Bird in Hand’s Woodside Estate in the Adelaide Hills, is no stranger to awards and success. It was recently included in Gourmet Traveller’s list of the 10 Best Restaurants in South Australia and also earned a nomination for Best New Restaurant at the Australian Gourmet Traveller Annual Restaurant Awards.

The restaurant has a distinct focus on using native Australian ingredients sourced from the Peramangk and Kaurna lands. Led by Executive Chef Jacob Davey, LVN offers a unique, seasonal menu consisting of eight to 10 dishes, designed to showcase the natural flavours of the region.

With a relaxed, natural ambiance and a design by Georgie Shepherd that blends fine dining with artistic aesthetics, LVN’s setting perfectly compliments its menu. Dishes feature local produce, often foraged by Indigenous communities, and are thoughtfully paired with Bird in Hand wines to elevate each course.

Opened this year, LVN is part of Bird in Hand Winery, a name synonymous with quality wine and sustainability. The restaurant’s design and ethos reflect the essence of the Adelaide Hills, making it a standout in the region’s dining scene.
