A South Australian winery is celebrating a major victory after claiming the prestigious title of ‘Best in Show’ at the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards held in London. Shingleback Wines, located in the renowned McLaren Vale region, was recognised for its exceptional Red Knot Classified GSM 2022. Remarkably, the award-winning wine retails for just $20.

The Decanter World Wine Awards, considered the largest and most influential wine competition globally, celebrated its 21st anniversary this year. The presence of over 18,000 wines from 57 countries highlights its scale. A panel of 243 expert judges, including 61 Masters of Wine and 20 Master Sommeliers, evaluated the entries. Out of these, only 50 wines, including Shingleback’s offering, earned the ‘Best in Show’ distinction.

Shingleback’s Chief Winemaker, Mark Jamieson, expressed his joy over the win. “My aim with this wine was to create a GSM that brings together the best quality of each variety – Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre – to create a wine greater than the sum of all its parts,” he remarked. Jamieson described the accolade as a career highlight and extended his gratitude towards the grape growers whose expertise contributed significantly to their success.

The Red Knot Classified GSM 2022 is noted for its aromatic blend of ripe strawberries, cherries, and roses, with a hint of chocolate, crafting a lighter-bodied red wine. The palate features bright berry flavours, ripe tannins, and a complex layering that contributed to its award-winning status.

Shingleback was not the only South Australian winery to relish success at the event. Chaffey Bros in Eden Valley for its Evangeline Syrah 2021 and Penny’s Hill Yeenunga McLaren Vale Grenache 2023 also received ‘Best in Show’ titles. With 30 top medals, South Australia emerged as the leading region in this year’s competition.

Australia overall performed outstandingly, securing eight ‘Best in Show’ awards, positioning it as the second highest achiever after France. Other Australian winners included Fermoy, Lowestoft, and Stella Bella, reinforcing the country’s reputation for producing premium wines.

The commendation for Red Knot Classified GSM 2022 showcases Shingleback’s dedication to excellence and highlights the quality of wine production in South Australia.

This wine is available for purchase at Dan Murphy’s for $19.99, offering wine enthusiasts an opportunity to experience a top-tier wine at a really accessible price point.
