2023 Ruby Award winners announced, celebrating outstanding artists and arts organisations

The awards highlight outstanding artists and arts organisations in South Australia while paying tribute to the vibrant arts and culture scene of the state.

The winners for the Ruby Awards 2023 have been revealed, after being awarded overnight in Adelaide at an exclusive invitation-only gala event at the Adelaide Festival Centre.. The awards highlight outstanding artists and arts organisations in South Australia while paying tribute to the vibrant arts and culture scene of the state.

More than 20 nominees were in the running for the coveted awards, which spanned seven prestigious award categories: Outstanding Community Event or Project, Outstanding Regional Event or Project, Outstanding Work, Event or Project for Young People, Outstanding Work or Event Within a Festival, Outstanding Work or Event Outside a Festival, Outstanding Collaboration, Outstanding Contribution by an Organisation or Group.

This diverse pool of talent demonstrates the rich variety of artists and arts organisations who are dedicated to producing innovative, inspiring, and collaborative works within South Australia.

The winners in these categories, along with four additional awards, celebrate the contributions of individuals to the state’s creative and cultural landscape.

The Ruby Awards are named after the late arts patron, Dame Ruby Litchfield and shine a spotlight on the remarkable achievements of South Australia’s arts and culture sector.

They acknowledge and celebrate artistic excellence, creative accomplishment, innovation, community engagement, and the inspirational leadership that fuels the ongoing growth of this dynamic sphere.

Outstanding Community Event or Project

WINNER: Wild Dog, Jacob Boehme

Outstanding Regional Event or Project

WINNER: Marungka Tjalatjunu (Dipped in Black), Derik Lynch and Matthew Thorne with Switch Productions

Outstanding Work, Event or Project for Young People

WINNER: the Boy & the Ball, Stephen Noonan

Outstanding Artistic Achievement by a South Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individual

WINNER: Proud Ngarrindjeri, Narungga, Kaurna and Noongar actress Natasha Wanganeen

Outstanding Work or Event Within a Festival

WINNER: Talk to Me, Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, Adelaide Film Festival 2022

Outstanding Work or Event Outside a Festival

WINNER: Beep and Mort – Series One, Windmill Pictures

Outstanding Collaboration

WINNER: Adelaide Film Festival EXPAND Lab 2022, Adelaide Film Festival, Samstag Museum of Art, Art Gallery of South Australia, Illuminate Adelaide, The Balnaves Foundation.

Outstanding Contribution by an Organisation or Group

WINNER: The Mill Adelaide

Frank Ford Memorial Young Achiever Award

WINNER: Percussionist Alexander Flood won the Frank Ford Memorial Young Achiever Award for outstanding artistic achievement by an individual young South Australian.

Geoff Crowhurst Memorial Award

WINNER: Tony Hannan, in recognition of his contributions to community arts and cultural development.

Premier’s Award for Lifetime Achievement

Diana Harris
Truly a remarkable South Australian who has left an enduring legacy in the arts and culture as one of our state’s most distinguished pianists, accompanists and educators. Congratulations Diana!

Nigel Levings
A brilliant stage lighting designer who, through a career of extraordinary service, has created an enduring legacy in the arts and culture.
