The iconic 2023 Variety SA Bash is about to kick off its thrilling eight-day journey from none other than the picturesque Port Adelaide this Saturday. You can head to the starting line with the whole family to take in all of the crazy costumes and colourful cars – all for a good cause.
For those not already in the know, the Variety SA Bash is no ordinary road trip. This incredible event, which has raised a staggering net sum of over $48 million for South Australian children, is a celebration of camaraderie, compassion, and sheer determination.
The bashers, as they’re affectionately known, embark on an eight-day drive through the stunning South Australian countryside, all in the name of supporting children who need it the most.
So, what’s so special about this year’s bash? Well, it’s all about the starting line. The 2023 Bash will be setting off in style from Port Adelaide, giving entrant families and the public a chance to mingle, greet the teams, and witness the colourful fleet of over 300 vehicles in all their glory.
The countdown begins early, with a meet and greet scheduled at 7:15 am, giving you the perfect opportunity to be part of the lively pre-departure buzz. The convoy, adorned with costumes and creativity and will hit the road at 9 am.
The Variety Bash was created by adventurer Dick Smith in 1985, which is all about the thrill of the open road and the joy of fundraising. It’s not a race, but a spirited adventure that celebrates vehicles with a minimum age of 25 years. The catch? While the cars are retro, the energy and enthusiasm are thoroughly modern, with bashers following the golden rule: have a blast while giving back!
Over the years, the SA Bash has remained true to its roots. It began its journey in 1989, and since then, participants have journeyed through the heart of Australia, uniting communities and spreading cheer. The funds raised have made a tangible difference, touching the lives of South Australian children who are facing illness, disadvantage, or disability.
For those planning to be part of the excitement, keep in mind that road closures and traffic detours will be in effect between 7 am and 10 am on Commercial Road, Nile St, Robe St, and North Parade in Port Adelaide.
