SA distillery launches exclusive Friday night Moonlight Tours

One of SA’s largest distilleries is opening its cellar doors for an unforgettable late-night adventure with their exclusive Moonlight Tours.

For a limited time, 23rd Street Distillery is opening its cellar door on Friday nights for an unforgettable late-night exclusive Moonlight Tour. Step into the heart of the distillery as the moon illuminates the still house and barrel hall, providing a unique behind-the-scenes look at the distillation process after dinner at the on-site restaurant.

For only $5pp, these special guided tours offer a thrilling glimpse into the world of distillation during a calm and serene atmosphere. Uncover the secrets that make the distillery truly unique and learn about the rich history and bold spirits that define its craft.

Group Venue Manager at the distillery, Hannah Papp-Horvath, says the idea for the Moonlight Tours was after the team “noticed the distillery takes on an ethereal charm once the stills fall silent”.

“Inspired by this atmosphere, we decided to craft an limited-time exclusive after-hours experience, blending the enchantment of the distillery at night with our premium dinner service,” she added.

Steeped in history, the 23rd Street Distillery site was originally established in 1914 to capitalise on the flourishing Riverland fruit harvests of the time. It was also home to a range of South Australian labels such as Chateau Tanunda, Renmano Wines, Berri Estate, and Hardy’s Wines.

At the heart of Twenty Third Street Distillery is a pair of heritage South Australian-built copper pot stills. Found gathering cobwebs at Berri Estate, the stills were once part of Hardy’s Reynella and Tintara in McLaren Vale, and were responsible for producing the grandfather of Australian brandy, the iconic Black Bottle Brandy.

After the site’s sad closure in 2004, new life was breathed into the property in the form of a family-led distillery, Twenty Third Street. The property, named after its address, officially opened on the 23rd of September 2016.

Hannah Papp-Horvath, says the ‘site has become home to so much beyond a distillery’.

“We take great pleasure in sharing what has come to be history core to the town of Renmark itself,” she said.

After years of repairs and relocations, the 7500 litre stills emanate a vintage, old-world aesthetic, complementing the distillery’s grand, high ceilings, vast timber beams and elegant interiors.

Named 2019’s Distiller of the Year in the Vintage Cellars Best of Awards, the Renmark boutique distillers now specialises in award-winning gins, vodkas, brandies, and whiskeys, all of which strive to modern, innovative, and story-telling drops. Notably, Managing Director Angelo Kotses also released a punchy and authentically made Ouzo, named after his grandfathers.

Whether you are a spirits enthusiast or simply seeking a distinctive night out, the Moonlight Tours promise an enchanting experience to explore all the regional distillery has to offer. This limited-time opportunity allows guests to immerse themselves in the magic of the night at 23rd Street Distillery.

Hannah Papp-Horvath, says the night tours will be filled with fun facts and history about the site.

“Learn about the wineries before us, how 23rd Street came to be, and what our mission is going forward, all while embracing the silence of the Distillery, without the hustle and bustle that usually carries on,” she said.

“They’ll get the opportunity to view the inner workings of our distillery and our extensive barrel warehouse, whilst getting the insider scoop on how we make our fantastic spirits, expect our tours to last between 30 and 45 minutes.”

During other times in the year, they also offer guided tastings, blend-your-own gin experiences, age-your-own whisky events, and cocktail masterclasses if you cant enough of their delicious offerings.
