$24 million Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre given the green light

The $24 million development will take approximately 18 months to complete, in time for the 2023-2024 swimming season.

Much to the delight of swimmers, families and the wider community, the Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre in Felixstow is undergoing a significant transformation.

In approximately 18 months time, the swimming centre will become an exciting aquatic park – a plan that was endorsed in 2017 as part of the Norwood, Payneham & St Peter’s Council Swimming Centres Strategy.

The Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre will be completely redeveloped with two new pools, high platform waterslides and water play areas. There will be a 50m pool and an all-season 25 metre pool available, as well as disability access ramps to facilitate the increased use of the existing facilities.

Mayor Robert Bria said the redevelopment will also boost the local economy by creating jobs and a direct spend on construction.

“While the Centre is much-loved, it is also desperately in need of major work, having been constructed in 1968,” Mayor Bria said.

“This investment will make a huge difference to people who use the centre making it even more popular given the exciting new features, including the high platform waterslides.”

The estimated cost is $24 million and has been made possible by a $5.6 million grant through the State Government’s Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program. Work is expected to start in mid–2022 and the project is estimated to take approximately 18 months.

The Council will be investing $16.5 million in 2022–2023. This is in addition to the Council’s $500,000 investment last financial year.

Once completed the total investment in the state-of-the art facility will be in the order of $24 million with $5.6 million contributed from the State Government.

The Swimming Centre will be completed for the 2023-2024 swimming season.
