$25 South Australian Fiano named Best in the World

A 2023 South Australian Fiano has earned the title of World’s Best Fiano with a Gold medal at the Decanter Awards, showcasing the exceptional value and excellence of McLaren Vale’s viticulture at just $25 a bottle.

Beresford Estate’s Emblem Fiano 2023 has received prestigious recognition at the Decanter World Wine Awards. The wine earned a 95-point Gold medal and was ranked No.1 in this year’s Fiano category, designating it as the premier Fiano globally.

The Beresford Emblem Fiano 2023 stands as a remarkable example among the gold-medal-winning white wines from Australia, particularly within the alternative variety segment. Notably, it shares a high score with some of the country’s premium $100 white wines, yet it is available at the affordable price of just $25.

Chris Dix, Head Winemaker at Beresford Wines, remarked on the progress of the Fiano varietal in the McLaren Vale region. “We witness the remarkable growth of Fiano in McLaren Vale, 22 years since the Lloyd family planted the first Fiano vine. The unique climate of the McLaren Vale region encourages wines of aromatic richness and textural depth, and this Fiano is a genuine reflection of the journey.” He further stated, “Having our Fiano recognised on such a prestigious platform is a proud moment for our team. It defies convention and showcases the diverse potential of Australian viticulture for Mediterranean varietals.”

The tasting notes reveal that the Beresford Emblem Fiano 2023 offers a bouquet fragrant with jasmine and honeysuckle, complemented by green apple, nashi pear, and white peach. Citrus, lemongrass, and a hint of pineapple add to the aroma. The palate features fresh citrus and nectarine alongside the crispness of green apple. Ginger and a sprinkle of white pepper add complexity. A bright acidity balances the flavour, with a touch of creaminess emerging as the wine ages on lees.

“Our success with the Beresford Emblem Fiano 2023 reflects our commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities in winemaking,” Dix said. “Winning this award demonstrates the exceptional quality of our Fiano and our dedication to producing wines that resonate with both tradition and innovation.”

The winemaking process involved an early morning harvest to minimise oxidation and gentle pressing to extract the free-run juice. The wine underwent fermentation at temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius, ensuring a slow and prolonged process that emphasised the wine’s floral and fresh characteristics. After fermentation, the wine was matured for three months in stainless steel tanks and rested on fine lees for six months.

Beresford Estate, nestled on a 70-acre vineyard in McLaren Vale, has been producing award-winning wines since 1985 under the stewardship of founders Rob and Bronwyn Dundon. The estate has earned approximately 2000 medals and 200 trophies internationally, with a portfolio including old vine Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay, along with newer additions like Fiano, Pecorino, and Grillo.

The Decanter World Wine Awards, now in its 21st year, is recognised as the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. This year, a panel of 243 wine experts from 33 countries judged a record-breaking 18,143 wines. Australian wines, in particular, have shown exceptional performance, securing significant accolade at the event.

The Beresford Emblem Fiano 2023 is available at the Beresford Tasting Pavilion in McLaren Vale, or you can buy it online here.
