Mount Barker is set to make a splash after its proposed $29.6 million aquatic and leisure centre received its final construction approval.

Tipped to be the biggest of its kind in regional South Australia, the centre will be a modern indoor facility, allowing for year-round use.

Mayor of Mount Barker District Council, Ann Ferguson, says Stage 1, which focuses primarily upon the aquatic centre, seeks to cater for as many different ages, interests and abilities as possible, creating a facility to support health and wellbeing and which meets the diverse aquatic needs of the region.

“A development of this calibre will further cement Mount Barker’s growing reputation as an exciting and progressive place to live, work and invest,” Mayor Ferguson said.

Stage 1 of the project, which has just received final approval, will include a 10-lane 25 metre competition and lap pool, an integrated learn to swim, leisure and children’s pool, fitness centre, creche and cafe.

The design allows for expansion in future stages, which will likely take the form of indoor sports courts, expanded aquatic facilities, an outdoor 50m pool and an indoor warm water hydrotherapy pool.

The aquatic and leisure centre will form part of the Summit Sports Hub, a larger sport, leisure and entertainment precinct which will likely span over 40 hectares.

The facility will be warmly welcomed in the growing community of Mount Barker, which has experienced extraordinary population growth in past years.

Work on the new centre will likely commence late next year.
