$32 shiraz named best in McLaren Vale at wine show

They walked away with the Best Shiraz and Best Young Shiraz trophies at the show’s 50th anniversary, celebrated at the much-anticipated Bushing Lunch.

Thistledown Wines just scored big at the McLaren Vale Wine Show, snagging two top prizes for their Cunning Plan Shiraz 2022.

They walked away with the Best Shiraz and Best Young Shiraz trophies at the show’s 50th anniversary, celebrated at the much-anticipated Bushing Lunch.

And this Shiraz is just $32.

It’s a pretty big deal, considering the McLarehn Vale Wine Show is a major event that draws some of the best wine judges from around the world. This show isn’t just about winning; it’s about showcasing wines that really represent what the region and its grapes are all about.

Giles Cooke MW, Thistledown’s winemaker, was delighted with this result: “Though we’re better known for our obsession with Grenache, our original mission at Thistledown was to make wines that were energetic, subtle, balanced and food-friendly.”

“We’d like to think that, irrespective of variety, that common thread binds all of our wines. None more so than our Cunning Plan shiraz which displays bright, supple fruit, layer upon layer of energetic black fruits and a slinky, delicious finish.”

“Like many of our wines, the quality of Cunning Plan is largely dictated by site selection and picking times, less so by winemaking dogma. We’re delighted to have won these trophies for a wine that is both accessible, and shows another side of Thistledown.”

The secret to their success? Focusing on picking the right sites and the right times to harvest, rather than sticking to a strict winemaking playbook. This approach has clearly paid off, giving us a Shiraz that’s not just easy to drink but also shows a different side of what Thistledown is capable of.

So, Thistledown Wines is celebrating these wins, but they’re also quick to point out that this Shiraz is just one example of their commitment to making quality wine.

With their Cunning Plan Shiraz 2022 now in the spotlight, it’s clear Thistledown is doing something right, and wine lovers should keep an eye on what they do next.
