Adelaide’s iconic Hutt Street is set for a major transformation as part of a new revitalisation project aimed at enhancing the urban landscape and supporting local businesses.
The initiative, with an impressive $8.5 million budget, promises to breathe new life into one of the city’s beloved precincts.
The project will introduce a host of improvements including new pathways alongside the city’s Park Lands, inviting pedestrians and cyclists to explore the vibrant neighborhood more freely. These pathways will be adorned with public art installations, creating a visually stimulating journey to the heart of Hutt Street.
Further enhancing connectivity, a new Park Lands trail crossing is also on the agenda, set to further weave the community together.
“Thanks to the Member for Adelaide’s strong advocacy, we have received a significant contribution from the State Government to help us deliver this project. This is only the beginning of Council’s $12.5 million commitment to a master plan that will transform Hutt Street,” Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith says.
“The Malinauskas Government is committed to supporting small businesses in South Australia and our $3 million investment in new infrastructure for Hutt Street will attract new people to the street to patronise local businesses” remarked Minister for Small and Family Business Andrea Michaels.
Local businesses are also excited about the potential increase in foot traffic. The arrival of new establishments like Davaar House of Wellness is anticipated to draw more visitors and support existing businesses that are vital to Hutt Street’s charm.
The project is part of a broader initiative by the City of Adelaide, which includes developing master plans for other main streets such as Gouger Street and O’Connell Street. Each of these plans aims to foster a unique cultural and commercial vibrancy reflective of Adelaide’s diverse community.
The first phase of the Hutt Street Master Plan, known as the Entry Statement Project, has already begun, focusing on immediate improvements such as better lighting, way-finding enhancements, and more greenery. These are designed as medium-term actions to uplift the area while the full master plan is being rolled out.
Completion of the Entry Statement Project is scheduled for November 2024, with the entire master plan continuing into 2026 following extensive community consultation. With these changes, Hutt Street is poised to become an even more essential part of Adelaide’s urban fabric, offering a welcoming and dynamic environment for both residents and visitors.
