South Australia’s wineries have shown they’re not just about the big names and usual suspects.

The real stars of 2023 have been the region’s Grenache and Rosé wines, proving that South Australia’s vineyards have more to offer than just the classics.

Four SA wines have been named in the wines that defined 2023, according to Wine Selectors.

Its wines like the Z Wine August Old Vine Grenache and Thistledown Thorny Devil Grenache have grabbed the limelight. They’re not your typical heavy reds; these Grenaches are all about being light, fresh, and perfect for easy drinking.

It’s the kind of wine that says, “Hey, relax, have a good time” without trying too hard.

Then there’s the Rosé – not just any Rosé, but ones like Turkey Flat Vineyards Rosé and Howard Vineyard Cabernet Franc Rosé.

These are the wines you’ll want to sip on a warm afternoon. They’re fun, they’re fruity, and they’re exactly what you need when you’re chilling out with friends.

What’s cool about these wines is how they reflect the places they come from. McLaren Vale and Barossa are showing they can do light and playful just as well as they do bold and serious. And the Adelaide Hills? Well, they’re proving to be the perfect spot for making Rosé that’s a bit more sophisticated but still down-to-earth.

2023 has been a year where South Australia’s wines have stepped out of the shadow of the more famous varieties. It’s been less about following the crowd and more about enjoying what’s different, what’s unique, and what’s genuinely enjoyable about South Australian wine.

So, here’s to the wines of South Australia – and especially the ones that have made 2023 a bit more interesting and a lot more fun.

Cheers to that!
