5 Things To Consider Before Having Cosmetic Surgery

It might not be for everyone but we can’t bury our heads in the sand and pretend that it isn’t happening… So check out these top tips to consider before you take the step to getting cosmetic surgery…

We get it. Cosmetic surgery might not be for everyone. But it would be silly of us to think that there is no one out there getting it done. Whether you’re thinking of trying Botox or are looking for a more ‘permanent’ result, there are definitely some things that you should consider before you go ahead and get anything done…

So we have hit up Dr Daniel Lanzer, one of Australia’s most prominent cosmetic surgeons. Considering that patients from all over the world visit him to have their procedure/s done, we figured that he was the man to tell us exactly what to do before we go under the knife.

Here are his top 5 things to consider before getting cosmetic surgery:

Do Your Homework

The internet is drowning in information about all things cosmetic surgery. Some of it helpful, some of it, well ahhh maybe just close that tab! It might be a great place to dip your feet and get a feel for what could be in store when it comes to different types of cosmetic surgery procedures available, but you most certainly can’t place all your trust in what you read on the internet. We really hope we aren’t stating the obvious there.

Dr Lanzer says that ‘Many patients need to consider that cosmetic procedures are always evolving.’

Treatments that used to be quite popular are now executed differently. A good example of this is the latest tumescent liposuction, where tumescent fluid is used to perform the procedure more easily. Even though most procedures have evolved for the better, there can be certain restrictions and requirements that have changed to reduce the risk for the patient. In order to understand the cosmetic procedure, it is essential to consult your GP before you head to a cosmetic surgery facility, or you can book an appointment with an experienced cosmetic surgeon to discuss your expectations and your suitability for a specific procedure.

Cheaper Is Not Always Better

Unless we are talking about that new pair of shoes that is on sale, then no, cheaper is not always better. There are a lot of people who may search for cosmetic surgery options overseas. They might feel that they can have the same procedure done in another country for a lot less money. Even though these procedures may be cheaper, they can actually cost you more in the long run.

The problem with cheaper procedures is that they are often executed in countries where cosmetic procedures are held to a lower standard. Standards for hygiene and patient safety are usually a lot less than what you would expect in Australia, which means that the patient has a higher chance of complications after surgery. You’ve heard the horror stories.

Cosmetic procedures executed abroad usually do not fall under a worldwide warranty; this means that an Australian surgeon probably will not be able to do anything to correct the problem or to handle the complications you are dealing with. The small amount of surgeons who will be able to help you with your complications, will have to charge for their services as well, subsequently adding to the total cost of your procedure.

‘At the end of the day, it can cost you more than having the treatment in Australia in the first place’ says Dr Lanzer.

Local Anaesthetic Vs General Anaesthetic

Many patients want to be unaware that the procedure is being performed. However, most procedures can actually be executed under a local anaesthetic. Local anaesthetic carries a lot less risk than a general anaesthetic, so if you can take advantage of it, be sure to do so.

Be Realistic About Your Expectations

A lot of people who are considering cosmetic surgery have some unrealistic expectations. For example, a person who is more than fifty pounds overweight believes he can get the perfect physique instantly by having liposuction. Even though mega liposuction can remove several litres of fat, you will still need to maintain your body after the procedure.

No matter which cosmetic procedure you choose, always consider the fact that you will have to look after yourself in order to maintain the results. For example, somebody who had laser resurfacing will have to moisturise the skin to promote the recovery and ensure good results.

Patients can get realistic expectations about their procedure by talking to their cosmetic surgeon. They will be able to give you a better idea of what you can expect after a procedure. So talk to your cosmetic surgeon to avoid any unexpected surprises.

Ensure You Are Comfortable With Your Surgeon

I don’t like my cosmetic surgeon but so what? Well it is actually really important to feel comfortable with your surgeon, since he is the person you will want to go to with any concerns or questions. If you are not at ease with your surgeon then you should probably head elsewhere!
