A four-star, 120-room hotel has been announced as part of Mount Barker’s Summit Precinct plan. The proposed $50 million development by South Australian-based Accord Property, will be built on land owned by the Mount Barker District Council at Springs Road and is part of a larger plan to improve visitor accommodation and attract investment.

The hotel will be the first major tourism project in the 50-hectare Summit Precinct, which already includes the Summit Sport and Recreation Park, and will soon open the Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre in late 2025.

Accord Property was chosen to develop the hotel after going through a competitive process. The company has a strong track record of delivering successful projects across the country, with Accord Property Managing Director Lachy Hogarth saying the development is not just about providing accommodation, it will also spark further investment in the precinct.

“This hotel marks the beginning of something much larger – it is the centrepiece of a vibrant new precinct that will attract visitors, create jobs, and elevate the region’s tourism appeal,” Mr Hogarth said.

“As the precinct evolves, a planned $15 million wellness centre will be integrated with the hotel in future stages, further enhancing the visitor experience and establishing the region as a sought-after destination for tourism and leisure.

“Mount Barker is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, and this development reflects our confidence in its potential. By working closely with the council and stakeholders, we are ensuring this precinct evolves in a way that maximises its impact and long-term success.”

The Summit Precinct’s transformation began in 2023 with the council seeking proposals to develop the site into a top tourism destination. Future plans include accommodation, conference facilities, recreational spaces, and the largest adventure playground in the region.

The proposed hotel, along with the Summit Sport and Recreation Park and the Aquatic Centre, will position Mount Barker as a leading destination for regional, state, and national events.

“This, in turn, would create considerable local employment and direct and indirect economic growth for our district,” Mount Barker Mayor David Leach said.

The development application for the hotel is now being reviewed by the State Commission Assessment Panel. The council also plans to involve the community in discussions about other public spaces, including the adventure playground and an extension of the Laratinga Wetland Trail.
