In collaboration with Renewal SA, leading Australian property developer Peet has unveiled plans to expand its Tonsley Village development by adding 50 homes and lush public open spaces to its ever-growing community.
Scheduled to commence construction in 2024 following planning approval earlier this month, the expansion plans embody a meticulous balance between residential growth and communal well-being. Mark Devine, Peet State Manager for South Australia, has highlighted the significance of this undertaking.
‘With Tonsley Village expected to house nearly 2,000 residents, it is important to strike the right balance between new housing supply and the need for public amenity’, says Devine. ‘This upcoming stage will do just this, significantly increasing the open space and parkland in the community, as well as providing another pedestrian pathway within Tonsley Innovation District.’
The forthcoming expansion features a sprawling 1.61-hectare area, with half dedicated to a nature reserve and wetland, fostering a harmonious coexistence with the environment, with the other half planned to hold nearly 50 new terrace homes.
Residents can anticipate a seamless integration of modern living combined with the beauty of nature, with the addition of covered BBQ areas and seating facilities integrated into the nearby Byron Reserve. Moreover, residents will also benefit from improved connectivity within Tonsley Village, which will be facilitated through a green link, fostering pedestrian and cycling pathways and improved access to Cohen Court Reserve.
The expansion project also introduces various housing options, including the sought-after Altura 1 and Altura 2 three-bedroom townhouses. Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Nick Champion, celebrates the initiative, emphasising its contribution to addressing the escalating demand for housing in the area.
‘Adding almost 50 new homes to Tonsley Village is a great opportunity to expand the developing local community in this important growth area’, Minister Champion said. ‘The new wetland and open space will benefit the whole community, which will get to utilise the communal BBQ space, amenities and improved access paths.’
‘Tonsley Innovation District’s backbone is innovation, and we see the project continuing to evolve to meet the ongoing requirements of the community—whether that be via the breakthrough technologies, products and services invented and manufactured in and around the Main Assembly Building or, in the case of Tonsley Village, mindfully creating more housing opportunities during a housing crisis’, said Mr Perry.
Renewal SA Executive Director, Property and Major Projects, Todd Perry, reflects on the distinctive character of Tonsley Village, stating, ‘Peet has done a wonderful job curating this tight-knit, well-balanced community, and residents will no doubt welcome the additional open space being delivered’.
Beyond residential expansion, Tonsley Village continues flourishing as a hub of innovation and creativity, with plans for the Boiler House micro-brewery, restaurant, café, and bottle shop scheduled to commence in April this year ahead of a planned opening later in 2025.
As Tonsley Village unfolds its next chapter of growth, City of Marion Mayor Kris Hanna acknowledges its transformation into a world-class Innovation Precinct.
