The State Government has announced 50 studio apartments will be built in Adelaide’s CBD to support older women at risk of homelessness.
Managed by the SA Housing Trust, this six-storey development on Tucker Street will include an on-site community wellbeing manager to assist tenants with any issues, and connect them to essential support services. It will also feature five studio apartments designed for individuals with mobility requirements.
The ground floor will offer space for support services, storage, a common area, and a courtyard for residents to enjoy. There will also be 59 bike spaces – one for each apartment and office, with extra spaces for visitors.
The Trust will work with community and health organisations to offer in-reach services, along with facilities such as meeting rooms, a computer room for tenants without devices, free Wi-Fi, multi-use spaces, and communal gardens to promote wellbeing.
“This accommodation will provide safety, sanctuary, and support to help older women begin a life of secure housing and all of the opportunity that brings,” Minister for Seniors and Ageing Well Nat Cook said.
“Ending homelessness in not just about putting someone in a house – we need to have the right supports in place to help people to succeed and this is exactly what this accommodation will do.”
Located near major shopping areas and Rymill Park, the site is also well-served by public transport, including the free City Connector Bus.
Construction is set to begin this week, led by South Australian builder the Mossop Group Pty Ltd. The apartments are expected to be completed by 2026.
“Tucker Street Apartments will provide safe and secure housing for older women at risk of homelessnes,” Minister for Housing and Urban Development Nick Champion said.
“The 50 studio apartments will be complemented by onsite support and medical services to help the tenants.
“The Malinauskas Labor Government is honouring an important election commitment to deliver a community facility to help vulnerable South Australians.”
