Planning a getaway to Europe during their summer (and escaping Adelaide’s cold snap), is an exciting endeavour. It’s a pretty epic trip to undertake though, with multiple flights, different time zones, and lots of elements to plan. When Glam Adelaide booked a last minute trip to Spain this month, there was A LOT to organise, which is why we got the experienced team at Phil Hoffmann Travel to sit down with us and plan the whole thing. We learnt a lot along the way, so we wanted to ensure that if you’re also thinking of heading to Europe to make the most of their beautiful Summer, that your holiday is also seamless and unforgettable. With a few key things to consider before you book, from navigating travel logistics to making the most of local experiences, here are six essential tips you need to know.

1. Timing is Everything
Spain is a popular summer destination, with tourists flocking to its sunny beaches, historic cities, and lively festivals. To avoid the peak tourist crowds and high prices, consider booking your trip for the shoulder seasons, either late spring (May to early June) or early autumn (September to October). During these times, the weather is still warm, but attractions are less crowded, and accommodation prices are more reasonable. Additionally, booking flights and accommodations well in advance can secure better deals and more options.
Phil Hoffmann Travel recommend spending three nights in each city if you’re able to, as this will give you the time you need to leisurely explore the city, discover all the hidden gems that you otherwise might not be able to see in one day, allows plenty of time in case of any surprises and ensures you don’t miss out on anything! If you have an itinerary with a lot of one-night stays, this means you only have around 5 – 7 hours in the destination. After you factor in the travel time, and especially if it was a long travel day, you will not feel up to exploring the city, even more so if you arrive late.
2. Understand Local Culture and Etiquette
Before traveling to Europe, take some time to understand local customs and etiquette. For instance, Spaniards typically have their meals later than in many other countries, with lunch often starting around 2pm and dinner not until 9pm or later. If you’re in Spain, embrace the siesta culture, where many shops and businesses close in the afternoon for a few hours. This downtime can be a perfect opportunity for a leisurely lunch or a relaxing break.
Learning a few basic Spanish phrases can go a long way in enhancing your travel experience. Phrases like “por favor” (please), “gracias” (thank you), and “¿dónde está?” (where is?) will be appreciated by locals and can make navigating the country easier.
3. Plan Your Itinerary Wisely
Spain offers a diverse range of experiences, from the beaches of Costa del Sol to the architectural marvels of Barcelona and the historical richness of Madrid. Plan your itinerary to balance popular tourist spots with off-the-beaten-path destinations. In Barcelona, don’t miss the iconic Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, while in Madrid, the Prado Museum and Royal Palace are must-visits.
For a more authentic experience, explore smaller towns and regions such as Andalusia with its Moorish influences, or the Basque Country known for its unique cuisine. Each region has its own distinct character and charm, offering a deeper insight into Spanish culture.
Group touring is also worth considering in your itinerary, as it can often be the best way to see a destination, especially if you haven’t been to that destination before. They also don’t have to be huge tour groups – you can book into smaller tours with as little as a dozen people in the group. There’s a range of different types of tour operators from cycling, hiking, adventure travel etc, all the way up to high-end luxury travel. Group touring not only provides the opportunity to make new friends for life, but also allows you to skip the queues of busy touring attractions, ensuring a more efficient and enjoyable experience. By joining a group tour, you’ll also benefit from gaining access to exclusive insights and lesser-known attractions too, as well as added conveniences such as pre-arranged transportation, meals, and accommodations, making your trip more seamless and stress-free. Ask the experts at Phil Hoffmann Travel for their recommendations for tour groups, as their team have experienced a wide range of options, and give you advice suited to your needs.
4. Leverage the Expertise of a Travel Agent
Booking a European holiday can be overwhelming, given the myriad of choices and logistics involved. This is where a reputable travel agency like Phil Hoffmann Travel can be invaluable. Travel agents can simplify the process by handling all bookings, from flights and accommodations to tours and activities. They also offer expert advice on destinations, ensuring you don’t miss out on must-see attractions.
One of the greatest benefits of using a travel agent is the support they provide during your trip. If anything goes wrong or if you need assistance, they are just a phone call away, ready to help resolve any issues. This peace of mind can make a significant difference, especially in a foreign country.
Different European countries also have different visa requirements, travel adapters and travel requirements. Your travel agent will provide you the most up to date travel advice and information before you go, allowing you to enjoy your holiday hassle and stress-free! Phil Hoffmann Travel even have a 24/7 emergency contact line that will allow you to get in touch if you need to while you’re on your travels.

5. Prepare for Different Climates and Activities
Spain’s climate varies significantly from region to region. The south, including cities like Seville and Malaga, can get extremely hot in summer, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C (104°F). Meanwhile, northern regions like Galicia have a more temperate climate. Pack accordingly, with lightweight, breathable clothing for hot weather, and layers for cooler evenings or visits to mountainous areas.
Additionally, Spain offers a wide range of activities, from beach lounging to hiking in the Pyrenees or exploring ancient ruins. Ensure your packing list includes appropriate attire and gear for all the activities you plan to enjoy.
6. Know what Travel Methods are Available and Recommended Before You Go
Governments in Europe (especially France) are encouraging people to opt for train travel rather than flight travel at the moment, so why not organise to get around on Europe’s incredibly elaborate train system. You will need to check with the rail company on whether you’ll need to pre-pay for your seats or whether you can just walk on, and again, this is something your travel agent can give you advice on. Train travel can also get more complex the more regional you go.
In Ibiza, we found that taxis can’t be hailed. There’s honour between the drivers, who not only meticulously keep their cars spotless, but also adhere to only collecting fares from taxi ranks. The sooner you learn this, the better! Your hotel can still order cars for you though, which is sometimes easier than hunting down your nearest rank. Ubers are also available. Water taxis are another easy way to get around on the island – with fares as low as 3e one way.

Booking a European summer holiday to Europe promises an adventure filled with cultural exploration, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. By considering these essential tips, from timing and cultural understanding to leveraging the expertise of a travel agent like Phil Hoffmann Travel, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. So, pack your bags, get your itinerary sorted, and get ready for the holiday of a lifetime in beautiful Europe!
