6 SA restaurants named Best in Australia in national awards

Six South Australian restaurants have taken home gold in the recent R&CA National Awards, named the best in the country.

Last night, Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA) revealed the distinguished winners of the 2023 Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence in Australia, following the state competition in October.

Six South Australian restaurants have won big, taking home first place in their category, with another four taking home a silver medal and five taking home bronze. This illustrious program celebrates and acknowledges exceptional service and culinary mastery across various categories in the hospitality industry throughout Australia and highlights the fantastic offerings in food and wine right here in SA.

Among the winners were Pony & Cole in Hindmarsh, winning Best Breakfast Restaurant in Australia, Boccelli Caffe Ristorante in Adelaide for Best Family Dining, Burger Incredible in Unley for Best Burger Bar, d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant in McLaren Vale winning Best Restaurant in a Winery, Mayura Station’s The Tasting Room in Millicent winning Best Formal Steak Restaurant and Events at SkyCity winning Best Function/Convention Centre Caterer.

Events at SkyCity also took home a major award on the night, winning the prestigious Caterer of the Year.

Restaurant & Catering (R&CA) CEO Suresh Manickam congratulated each of the winners on behalf of the Association. ‘We are pleased to celebrate the achievements of Australia’s most distinguished operators’, says Mr Manickam. ‘To achieve Gold, Silver or Bronze in the National Awards is a testament to each recipient’s hard work and dedication to their craft.’

Other South Australian restaurants that were recognised on the night and awarded second place were Estia in Henley Beach, awarded second for Best Greek Restaurant, Seafire on the Marina in Glenelg for Best Informal Steak Restaurant, Miss Viet Kitchen, awarded for Best Vietnamese Restaurant and Chartwell’s – St Ann’s College in North Adelaide for Best Industrial/Institutional Caterer.

Last but not least, a selection of SA restaurants rounded out the award winners on the night, taking home third place in the national competition.

These included Bombora on the River in Goolwa South, taking home third for Best Cafe Dining, Pipers of Penola in Penola, winning bronze for Best Contemporary Formal Australian Restaurant, Sportivo Pizzeria & Cafe in West Lakes winning third for Best Pizza Restaurant, Watervale Hotel in Watervale taking home bronze for Best Restaurant in a Pub/Club, and lastly, Civeo – Prominent Hill in Glendambo awarded bronze for Best Site-Contract Caterer.

The awards spanned various culinary genres, from Asian and Italian cuisine to seafood and steakhouse specialties.

Mr. Manickam thanked all winners, sponsors, and attendees on behalf of the association.

‘These awards are only made possible by the hard work and dedication of our industry peers. Their ongoing support and enthusiasm for what we do is deeply appreciated. We look forward to hosting our Awards for Excellence program again over the course of the coming year.’

These achievements serve as a powerful endorsement of South Australia’s renowned fine food and wine scene, a reputation that is recognised on an international scale. The 2023 Hostplus Awards for Excellence award winners are shining examples of South Australia’s exceptional culinary landscape and have undoubtedly earned their esteemed status in the world of dining distinction.
