One of South Australia’s wine capitals, Clare was abuzz with excitement over the weekend, as the winners of the 2023 CCL Label Clare Valley Wine Show were unveiled.
The awards ceremony celebrated the region’s finest wines, with red wine varieties stealing the show.
Jim Barry Wines clinched the coveted title of the Best Exhibitor of the Show. Their excellence didn’t stop there; the winery also took home 11 individual trophies, solidifying their position as a leading name in the Clare Valley wine scene.
The judging panel was unanimous in their praise for the red wines showcased. They believed that the wines had achieved a pinnacle of quality, previously unseen in the region.
Nick Stock, the Chair of the Judging Panel, expressed his admiration for the wines.
“It was great to be in the Clare Valley, where the focus this year was to really identify wines of true provenance, not just in the trophy winners, but across entire field of judging,” he said.
“The results are indicative on quality wines in the region, as well as the distinctiveness and strong sense of provenance the region can deliver.
“The 2023 winners are relevant, delicious and exciting wines across every single style. The strength of the 2021 vintage is no secret for Clare Valley wine and in this year’s show, we saw the 2021 reds really take centre stage.
“I feel the region has reached a new level of quality with these 2021 reds. It is really something to celebrate,” he said.
This year’s wine show saw the debut of the Best Vintage Section Grenache trophy. Kenny Wine’s 2022 Sevenhill Grenache was the proud recipient of this inaugural award.
The 2023 Clare Valley Wine Show witnessed participation from 40 exhibitors, presenting a staggering 458 entries across 24 classes. The judges had their work cut out for them, and by the end of the event, 304 medals were awarded, including an impressive 43 Gold.
