Eight-year-old Sammy Scully, known as ‘Sergeant Sammy’, experienced another thrilling day with the South Australia Police (SAPOL) as part of his special assignment, aimed to make his wish come true.

Diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour last January, Sergeant Sammy’s aspiration to join the police, especially the Dog Operations Unit, was embraced wholeheartedly by SAPOL and Mix 102.3.

His adventure began with a visit to SAPOL’s Water Operations Unit. Here, Sgt Sammy, accompanied by his sisters Abigail and Erin, and mother Alison Harrison, explored the unit. They toured on Police Launch 2 and even spotted some dolphins while patrolling the Port River.

“It was great to have Sergeant Sammy back and we know it meant a lot to him and his family,” Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said.

The day progressed with more exciting activities for Sergeant Sammy. He joined the drug detection training at the Dog Operations Unit in Netley where he assisted PD Fang, a golden labrador, in locating illegal substances.

The young recruit also took part in various training exercises and tackled an obstacle course alongside PD Cooper. The pinnacle of his visit came during a playdate with three black German Shepherd puppies, which he described as the best part of his day.

“The puppies were so cute and cuddly, I wanted to take them all home,” Sammy said.

The schedule continued at the Mounted Operations Unit where Sergeant Sammy undertook feeding duties for SAPOL’s police horses and took an inspiring ride on Police Horse General at Thebarton Barracks, offering him a unique vantage point.

“Sgt Sammy did an amazing job today. He certainly set the standard for the rest of the recruits joining SAPOL,” Commissioner Stevens said.

When asked why he wanted to be a police officer, the young recruit said, “It’s just a great job and I like helping people.”

Overall, SAPOL members were pleased to welcome Sgt Sammy back to the beat and extend his experience of belonging in blue.

“Thank you to all our members who went out of their way to welcome Sammy and ensure he had a fantastic experience,” Commissioner Stevens said.
