Australia’s Best Lamington was 85 years in the making

Over the years, the family business has been awarded ‘Australia’s Best Lamington’ at the National Baking Awards (more than once, believe it or not) and expanded their sweet enterprise to be stocked in supermarkets across Adelaide.

True-blue South Australians are celebrating 85 years of award-winning lamingtons with Kytons Bakery.

Their lamington line-up is the pride and joy of Kytons since opening in 1938.

Ahead of next week’s Australia Day celebrations, Kytons is reopening their bakery shopfront after a summer break, to meet demand for the national dessert of choice.

The family owned and operated company have made sure that the humble lamington gets a time to shine this January with an array of different colours, sizes and flavours.

Sharron and Darren Sutton are celebrating more than just the 85-year milestone this year.

In 2023, they’ll be celebrating their 30-year wedding anniversary and 20-year Kytons anniversary since the couple bought the company back in 2003.

They’re the third family to own Kytons Bakery, which from the mid-1940s to the mid-1980s was operating out of the Adelaide Central Markets.

“We’ve grown a lot in the past couple of years, we’re bursting at the seams in Edwardstown,” said Kytons co-owner Sharon Sutton.

“We always select premium quality ingredients and source our ingredients from Australia as much as possible – knowing that you would do the same if you were baking for yourself at home,” said Sharon.

However, there’s more to it than simply knowing lamingtons started in Australia…

Kytons wants the world to know that Australia also makes them tastier.

The two ingredients to a proper lamington are a good egg-sponge and authentic chocolate, according to the couple. It’s that rich taste that SA have associated with the business across school and community group fundraisers, corporate gigs and all sorts of food service fanfare.

“Our pursuit of quality means that we use the best ingredients, follow traditional recipes and take great care in our baking,” added Sharon.

Over the years, the family business has been awarded ‘Australia’s Best Lamington’ at the National Baking Awards (more than once, believe it or not) and expanded their sweet enterprise to be stocked in supermarkets across Adelaide. They’ve had success in other avenues too, such as their hot cross buns, mince pies and Christmas puddings, which have all taken home their own awards…

In January, it’s all about the signature lamington though.

First impressions are important and this is the way that they can say g’day!

The enticing range of fluffy flavours such as Traditional, Raspberry, Coffee, Mini Traditional and Native Lemon Myrtle can differ from stockist to stockist, but it’s helped parents pack lunches for picky eaters.

It’s bizarre to think what might have happened if Sharon hadn’t met her now-husband, Darren, back in university while studying politics and economics.

We know which life sounds sweeter.

With school going back soon and Australia Day fast approaching, you can find Kytons Bakery lamingtons in the fridge section of Foodland, Drakes & selected Woolworths, along with gourmet fruit & veg stores. It’s a huge evolution across 85 years, from fundraising to fun and easily accessible snacks. They freeze beautifully for a fresh start to recess, when the kids need a pick me up before maths.

However, if you’re salivating while you write read this article and you’re wondering about a trip to Kytons Bakery itself, then you’re in luck. The retail outlet in Edwardstown has been taking a summer break but will thankfully reopen on Wednesday, January 25 from 9am – 2pm, stocked full of award-winning lamingtons.

WHERE: Kytons Retail Outlet at 15 Lindsay Ave Edwardstown

WHEN: Reopens Wednesday 25th January from 9am- 2pm
