A 170-year-old shipwreck discovered only 400m off SA Coast

The wreck of a Dutch ship lost to a violent storm has been found off the SA coast, nearly 170 years after it sank.

The sea has always kept secrets, deep, buried, and hidden from the world. But in a stunning twist, one of those secrets just off the coast of South Australia has just been brought back to life.

After nearly 170 years, the Koning Willem de Tweede, a Dutch merchant ship that near Robe, South Australia, has been rediscovered. This isn’t just about a shipwreck; it’s about history, survival, and a connection to the waves that shaped Australia’s past.

It’s June 1857. The Koning Willem de Tweede is a vital link for over 400 Chinese miners bound for the Victorian goldfields. After unloading its passengers in Robe, the ship gets caught in a storm… a storm so brutal that it tears the vessel apart, claiming the lives of 16 crew members.

The wreck has long since slipped below the surface, buried in time and waves, until now.

Navigate to 2025, when a group of maritime researchers finally track down the wreck site off Guichen Bay, around 400 meters from shore. Using advanced tech including marine magnetometers, they began to uncover the remains of the ship. They found a windlass (the giant winch used to hoist the anchor) and pieces of the ship’s timber still lodged beneath the sand.

It’s like the ocean has been keeping a journal of its own, ready to tell us what happened that fateful day in 1857.

But this discovery goes beyond just finding old iron and wood. It’s an insight into the past that gives us a deeper understanding of a period in Australian history that’s often overlooked. The ship wasn’t just a casualty of the sea, it was part of a larger story about migration, the gold rush, and the people who helped shape Australia.

The Koning Willem de Tweede is the first known shipwreck to have carried Chinese migrants to Australia during the gold rush. Over 15,000 miners passed through Robe to make their way inland, and many of them would have traveled to the goldfields in search of riches and a new life.

Now, as the site is explored, the team is hopeful about what they might find next. Will there be personal belongings? Hidden artefacts? One thing is for sure, this is a piece of Australia’s past that we are only just beginning to uncover.
