A 5, 6, 7, 8…A Chorus Line is set to dazzle Adelaide audiences this week

The dance extravaganza, A Chorus Line, opens in Adelaide this week

This week, Elder Conservatorium’s Musical Theatre program will present the final production for its graduating class of 2023: A Chorus Line. Fresh from three years of full time study and on the cusp of entering the performance industry professionally, this is Adelaide’s final opportunity to see the next generation of Musical Theatre talent showcased.

A Chorus Line is led by an all-star creative team. Director Matt Hyde is known to Adelaide audiences for stand-out performances in The Normal Heart, Eureka Day (both STCSA), and Macbeth (Independent Theatre). Guest choreographer Luke Alleva is intimately acquainted with the work, having performed in the 2012 Australian tour of A Chorus Line under the direction of original cast member Baayork Lee. Musical Director Martin Cheney has cemented himself as an asset to the Adelaide musical and orchestral landscape.

Described by Director Matt Hyde as “A beating heart of a show”, A Chorus Line was revolutionary when it debuted in 1975, breaking convention and the fourth wall when it shared insights into the behind-the-scenes life and struggles of dancers and performers. Presented in 2023, the show is ever-relevant in its timeless exploration of the strength, resilience, hardships, and determination of the unsung heroes of the Chorus.

Taylah Johns plays the feisty and passionate Diana Morales, whose disdain for her curmudgeon high school acting teacher makes for plenty of comedy in the iconic number Nothing, and whose resilience and heart culminates in the anthem What I Did for Love. Ms Johns, who relocated from Queensland to study at the Conservatorium, said of the graduating piece “is one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences, with Diana’s unapologetic nature and passion for theatre igniting the same fire within myself.”

A two-hour extravaganza of breath-taking choreography, rich characterisation, and stunning vocal performances, A Chorus Lineis considered one of the most physically and emotionally demanding pieces in the Music Theatre canon. Of the stamina and concentration required for this graduating piece, Ms Johns said “it has been the perfect show to springboard the 2023 graduating cohort into the professional industry.”

With choreography and music that has become iconic, and a story of resilience, passion, and heart, A Chorus Line will be an unforgettable night out for anyone with a love for the theatre.

A Chorus Line plays at the Scott Theatre, Adelaide from Thursday 28th September to Sunday 1st October. Tickets from $39, available at https://www.trybooking.com/CGESP .
