If you’re looking to help out with a good cause this summer, Kies Family Wines has just the thing. As the Tour Down Under cycles through the Barossa, Kies is inviting locals and visitors to help out with a cause that truly matters, with a Walk for Wildlife walkathon on the winery’s front lawns in support of Barossa Wildlife Rescue.
The idea was sparked by a personal experience that hit close to home. “One day I was out walking with my kids and came across a very sick possum,” said Jesseca Kies. “His nose was all bloodied, it was a stinking hot afternoon, and I had no idea who to call. I googled it… and found Barossa Wildlife Rescue. They were there within 20 minutes to help that poor little guy. I was honestly blown away. These people do this every day (often late at night) for animals who have no voice.” It was a moment that left a lasting impression on the team, and a reminder of the work these volunteers do every day, often late at night and without hesitation, for animals who can’t ask for help themselves.
Barossa Wildlife Rescue is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation supporting the Barossa Valley and surrounding regions, averaging around 900 rescues and callouts each year. Founded by registered wildlife carer Rose Brooks, the organisation is a dedicated community of volunteers working toward the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured, orphaned and displaced native wildlife. In late 2024, the opening of the Rose Brooks Wildlife Sanctuary was a huge milestone, providing a near-natural permanent home for hand-raised kangaroos that can’t be released back into the wild.

Kies Family Wines is stepping up to help raise vital funds in the most Barossa way possible by bringing people together. On Wednesday, January 21st, the winery’s front lawns will become the setting for a giant bike shape, with participants literally walking the “wheels” to form the design from above. The goal is for 200 walkers to raise at least $500 for Barossa Wildlife Rescue, with Kies donating $2 for every participant who joins in. Walkers can also register to fundraise, ask friends to sponsor their steps, or simply come along and donate on the day.
Open to families, school groups and anyone keen to help out with a good cause, the walkathon is a relaxed, inclusive way to be part of the Tour Down Under celebrations while making a real difference locally. It’s all about getting outside with the local community and knowing that every lap walked helps support the incredible humans caring for some of the Barossa’s most vulnerable animals. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back this summer, Walk for Wildlife at Kies Family Wines is your time to step up, join in and be part of something special.
