A Beer Battle is Brewing

More and more Aussies are favouring a slender stubbie of craft beer over a pint from the big breweries but do they know the humble beginnings of what they’re drinking? Three of Australia’s leading brewers are going head-to-head-to-head and telling their stories in a battle to be crowned the crowd’s favorite brewer.

The Highway, awarded SA’s Best Hotel in 2012 by the AHA and owned by leading hotel group, The Palmer Hospitality Group, has been hosting Battle of Beers for the past three years with increasing success.

According to The Highway’s General Manager, Simon Adami the ‘refined craft beer palate’ trend will only continue to grow and with it comes a thirst for knowledge.

“Each craft brewery has its own unique success story to tell. Often these stories are filled with triumph, tragedy and heartache until one day, a pub comes along and decides to stock the brewery’s beer.”

“Craft beer drinkers enjoy hearing the stories behind the beer they’re drinking and bar staff are often relied upon to retell these stories. But who better to tell the story behind the brewery than the brewer themselves?” said Mr Adami.

“Bridge Road Brewers was conceived in 2005 in Brewer, Ben Kraus’s Dad’s shed, McLaren Vale Beer Company was born from a business plan scribbled on the back of a napkin and Birbeck’s brewing Company evolved out of ten years of home brewing. After a few stubbies, the brewers tell an animated and probably tall tale of their humble beginnings.”

Birbeck’s Brewing Company Brewer, Jared Birbeck, has told the story of his beers evolving while holding up the bar many times before.

“Like anyone would be about something they’ve poured their heart and soul into, I’m passionate about and proud of my beers. Honestly, I’ll talk about them to anyone who’ll listen!” said Mr Birbeck.

“Being given a platform to share my story to an audience who are there especially to hear about it and ask me questions is a dream come true! I just hope they like my story and my beer enough to vote for it,” concluded Mr Birbeck.

Jared Birbeck will be telling his story alongside Head Brewer of McLaren Vale Beer Company, Jeff Wright. Bridge Road Brewers Head Brewer, Ben Kraus will go to battle via Skype to tell the story behind his beer at the Battle of the Beers beer lunch on August 9.
