Review: A Fashionable Afternoon With LOVE TWAIN

Love Twain hosted ‘An Afternoon of Fashion and Beauty with Love Twain and Co’ on the weekend, and it was really really good.

Once upon a time, two Adelaidean girls with a fierce love of Australian fashion and a keen eye for what’s ‘now’ brought together their diverse professional skills (one is a marketer, one is a journalist) to begin a website named LOVE TWAIN. In April 2014, Ash and Ena made it happen. Fast forward to now and the site, which at its core is an online fashion store, is a whole lot more than simply a place to buy your clothes. It’s a blog, a hair and beauty go-to, a lifestyle centre and a mood board. Women can spend hours reading up on LOVE TWAIN’s interviews with integral members of the Australian fashion community, learning about the perfect hair products for the girl on the go, or trawling designs from every Australian fashion designer, from Búl to Cameo to Karla Spetic and beyond.

And yesterday? Well, yesterday the LOVE TWAIN girls stepped out from behind their computers to host An Afternoon With LOVE TWAIN & CO.

Set on the Hotel Richmond balcony overlooking the lively Rundle Mall on Sunday, some of Adelaide’s trendiest ladies and men spent the afternoon learning the ins and outs of beauty, hair and style.

Following an early afternoon of shopping at the LOVE TWAIN pop up, guests were treated to champagne and some very welcome nibbles (cute little baskets of calamari and chips are always a Sunday afternoon win).

Celebrity make-up guru (who worked as a Promotional Consultant and Makeup Artist for Chanel for 10 years, mind you), Ant Adams, walked us through how to create impeccable eyebrows, an easy smokey eye and the correct way to contour.

Kevin Murphy’s Australian Style Master, Jason Fassbender, then talked us through creating perfect beach waves sans beach and a few easy up-do’s to try aside from the classic top knot bun (the chignon is making a comeback, people). He made it look really easy, but I’m willing to bet my next dye job that I’ll still be resorting back to my usual half-up-half-down after a few too many failed attempts.

To end the afternoon, Australian fashion designer and former Project Runway Australia contestant, Jamie Ashkar, walked us through his current collection, a few styling tips and his fashion trend forecast. According to Jamie, pastel yellow will be in for the next few seasons, parkas (especially the transparent kind) are going to take off in a big way, and safari will soon be HUGE.

After a tute, lecture, course or workshop, I always question myself: Did I actually learn anything? My answer proceeding An Afternoon With LOVE TWAIN & CO was yes. So much yes. I now know that I probably could get away with a sheer Jamie Ashker pencil skirt if I had the guts, that I really shouldn’t put bronzer on my nose and that, unless I’m keen to keep the frizz (I’m not), I really really should stop joojing my freshly towel dried hair.

And to top it all off, I got a goodie bag and some free undies!

Co-founder, Ash, was impressed with the event as well, stating that “the event was amazing. We were both really happy with the response to the pop up shop and the workshop”.

When the girls host their next LOVE TWAIN event in February 2015, I 10/10 would recommend.
