If you’ve been down to Bowden or Brompton this past week, specifically around Drayton Street, you may have noticed some interesting new signage around the former Brompton Gasworks site. Behind tall white fences and colourful artists impressions, a historic transformation is in development, as plans progress to revitalise the legacy-rich site to create a vibrant urban village that blends heritage, sustainability and community.
In this alluring fusion of history and modernism, The Gasworks will deliver over 800, 100% gas-free homes to 2000 residents, a hotel, an employment hub, commercial and retail trading, and the restoration of landmark heritage buildings.
The new residential precincts will be powered by 100% renewable energy as the Gasworks plans to achieve a 6 star Green Star Communities rating. The new village will feature an abundance of green spaces and walkable streets, with the extension of Bowden’s vibrant atmosphere and community at the heart of the project.
An integral part of Adelaide’s history, the Gasworks provided important infrastructure and business that helped our home develop from a town into the city it’s become. Established in the mid-19th century, the Gasworks was founded by The South Australian Gas Company at a former brickworks site. In May 1863, the first fires were lit, marking the beginning of 150 years of gas production and supply to Adelaide homes and businesses.
Soon after, the site was adapted to suit its new purpose with the construction of several small buildings, including a retort house, the purifying house, a large chimney, and the iconic Chief Street wall, which still stands today.
The future vision for The Gasworks will allow the adaptive reuse, restoration and integration of the existing heritage structures, seamlessly blending history, open space, sustainability, and community.
The development being designed by Forum Studio and headed by MAB, a large-scale urban renewal business co-founded by Michael and Andrew Buxton. The company has been managing residential projects for over 20 years, collaborating with government, landowners, acclaimed local architects and the community to create contemporary, award-winning residences.
As development moves forward, property in the new Gasworks village is scheduled to become available from 2025 onwards. To be part of The Gasworks, register here for the latest news and be the first to hear about future stage releases.
