Mother Nature is a glorious thing at the best of times but every now and then she likes to put on a show to really exhibit her beauty. Today and tomorrow are the perfect example.
Look to the skies any night from Friday to Sunday and you could be in for a treat as the Eta Aquariid rains down across the skies of South Australia.
The Eta Aquarid meteors are known for their super quick speed, traveling at about 148,000 mph into Earth’s atmosphere. Then, the bits of debris in the wake of the meteor leave streams of light which last for several seconds to minutes.
In general, about 30 Eta Aquarid meteors can be seen per hour during their peak.
The best time to see the incredible natural light show is between 3am to 5am in the morning. That’s because, in the evening sky, the earth is facing the wrong way.

And for those of you living in regional areas, count your lucky stars because you’ll have a better view than any due to the distance away from the city lights.
Ideal viewing points around the metropolitan area include locations such as Windy Point Lookout, Lions Park Scenic Lookout in Wynn Vale, viewing spots along Mt Osmond Road on Mt Osmond and anywhere you can see a broad swathe of sky without streetlights glaring into your eyes. Basically, get as far away from bright lights as physically possible.
Cross your fingers and hope for a cloudless dawn and get comfortable for some gorgeous astro work.
