A new era for local gymnastics as Tea Tree Gully opens a $9.2m state-of-the-art centre

The upgrade marks a major milestone for a community institution that has supported gymnasts for more than 50 years.

Tea Tree Gully Gymsports is catapulting into a new era this week, with the opening of a $9.2 million state-of-the-art facility that promises to reshape the future of local gymnastics. As South Australia’s largest gymnastics club, the upgrade marks a major milestone for a community institution that has supported generations of gymnasts for more than 50 years.

Backed by a $3.5 million State Government grant and further investment from the City of Tea Tree Gully, the project brings every arm of the club’s training program under one roof for the first time. The purpose-built high-performance space is designed to elevate both training and competition standards, giving athletes and families an environment that finally reflects the scale and ambition of the club.

During construction, the new facility was cleverly positioned behind the original building so the club could deliver its full program without interruption. The old structure has now been demolished, paving the way for much-needed additional parking, a practical upgrade that parents and visitors will no doubt appreciate.

Adding to its visual impact, the new building features an eye-catching large-scale public artwork, a trio of polygon stainless steel sculptures created by Adelaide artist Claude Portelli. Developed in collaboration with Tea Tree Gully Council and Tea Tree Gully Gymsports, the installation draws inspiration from photographs of three local gymnasts, making the work both a tribute to the discipline and a celebration of local talent.

The club’s offerings span the full spectrum of the sport, from KinderGym and PreGym through to men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, trampoline, and tumbling, all of which will benefit from the improved layout, modern equipment, and competition-ready environment.

Mayor Marijka Ryan says the new home is a win for everyone involved. “For a club that’s supported generations of young gymnasts, having a home like this just makes sense. It’s going to make a real difference for athletes and their families, and I’m proud to see it finally come to life,” she says.

With a bigger, better and more cohesive facility now ready to welcome them, Tea Tree Gully Gymsports is set to continue its legacy as a powerhouse for local gymnastics and a cornerstone of community sport.
