Great news for outdoor lovers! The Amy Gillett Bikeway/Pathway is getting an upgrade, with work charging ahead on its latest extension from Mount Torrens to Birdwood.

Soon, cyclists, walkers, dog owners, and even horse riders will have an extra six kilometres of smooth, flat, and scenic track to enjoy in the Adelaide Hills. If all goes to plan, this new stretch will be ready to roll by June.

The extension will take the bikeway from its current endpoint in Mount Torrens right through to Birdwood.

So far, around two kilometres of fresh bitumen have been laid, and work is well underway on three brand-new bridges, along with drainage and groundwork improvements, ensuring this new section will be another stunning addition to the trail.

Adelaide Hills Council Deputy Mayor Nathan Daniell said the Bikeway has always been popular and this project highlights Adelaide Hills Council’s commitment to expanding recreational opportunities for our community.

“We know spending time outdoors and exercising will positively impact on the physical and mental well-being of people, which is one of the reasons we have worked so hard to bring this extension to fruition.”

For those who haven’t yet experienced it, the Amy Gillett Bikeway is a 17km stretch of track running from Oakbank to Mount Torrens along a disused railway corridor.

Named in memory of Australian cyclist Amy Gillett, who tragically lost her life in 2005, the bikeway is more than just a way to get from A to B—it’s a tribute to the joy and safety of cycling.

Loved by locals and visitors alike, this trail is one of the best ways to soak up the fresh Hills air, travel past vineyards, and maybe make a few pit stops along the way. Whether it’s for a coffee, a long lunch, or a cheeky wine tasting, there’s no shortage of reasons to take it slow and enjoy the ride, stride, or roll.

“The new Bikeway extension will also provide new opportunities for tourists to explore the Adelaide Hills region, taking in incredible scenery and making it easier to visit iconic attractions such as the National Motor Museum in Birdwood,” added Nathan Daniell.

Backed by a $5.7 million investment, with both the Federal and State Governments chipping in $2.6 million each and the Adelaide Hills Council adding $500,000, this project is full steam ahead.

The first 500 metres of the new section will be completed soon to meet funding requirements, with major construction works set to kick off later in the year. While the full extension is expected to be finished by mid-2025, the Mount Torrens to Birdwood section should be ready much sooner.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior on two wheels, a casual walker, or just looking for another excuse to explore the Hills, the Amy Gillett Bikeway is about to deliver even more reasons to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors.
