A series of free textile upcycling workshops are hitting Aldinga this summer

Want to learn how to make your own clothes or craft unique gifts for friends? Now’s your chance to give it a go!

Ever dreamed of making your own clothes or piecing together accessories to gift your friends but don’t know where to start? Here’s your chance!

Wild Woman of Willunga is hosting Free Summer Recycled Textiles Workshops at the ‘Here’s to Strength Wellness Hub’ in Aldinga, supported by the City of Onkaparinga. The series encourages sustainability by turning preloved garments into creative new items. From denim jewellery to Christmas decorations, bags, and bucket hats, these workshops are teaching you how to make it all.

The workshops are all about creativity, connection, and sustainability. “It’s about educating people on the war on waste,” said Brenda Richards, behind Wild Woman of Willunga, referring to Craig Reucassel’s ABC show which uncovered the shocking effects the country’s waste crisis has on the environment. “It was absolutely mind-blowing,” Brenda said. “It made me realise how disconnected we can be from the things we throw away and how much potential there is in reusing what we already have.”

Through hands-on activities, participants can learn practical sewing and design skills in a relaxed, social environment. “It’s about empowering people, showing them how to use a sewing machine and how to make something out of nothing,” Brenda said.

Wild Woman of Willunga, who regularly runs upcycling workshops across southern Adelaide, said the sessions are as much about wellbeing as they are about sustainability. “It’s a perfect combination, a marriage between a non-profit focused on wellbeing and me coming in with the creative workshops,” she said. “It’s about people feeling good about what they’re doing.”

The initiative aligns with the City of Onkaparinga’s Community Vision 2034 & Healthy Thriving Community Mission, which promotes social connection and mental wellbeing through creative engagement.

The workshops are free to attend, with bookings now available for four separate dates. Sessions cover the following: Denim Jewellery Making on 11 December, Fabric Christmas Decorations on 14 December, Turning Jeans into Bags on 8 January, and Reversible Bucket Hat making on 25 January.
