Another South Australian winery is kicking goals around the world! This time, Paracombe Wines based in our backyard of the Adelaide Hills. They have made a wine that is quite literally fir for a king – and queen, prince and princess.
That’s the latest honour to be bestowed on Paracombe Wines’ Sauvignon Blanc after the 2014 vintage was selected as one of just three wines served at the recent prestigious ‘Sverigemiddag’ – or Sweden Dinner – last month.
The dinner, hosted at the Royal Palace in Stockholm by Sweden’s King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia and the Crown Prince Couple of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, honoured some 200 members of Swedish society who have made significant contributions to the nation over the past 12 months. It was first held in 2013 to mark the King’s 40th Anniversary on the throne.
A clearly thrilled Paracombe Wines owner Kathy Drogemuller said the accolade was a wonderful surprise, a significant achievement for Paracombe Wines and great news for the greater Australian wine industry.
“We’re delighted that our 2014 Sauvignon Blanc was chosen by the Swedish Royal Family for such an auspicious occasion,” Ms Drogemuller said.
“It is a great acknowledgement of the Paracombe district, the Adelaide Hills wine region, our family, team and local neighbours and growers who all work hard – and with passion and commitment – to produce great wines.
“But more than that, it’s another significant coup for the Australian wine industry and certainly strengthens our standing as a nation that consistently produces some of the world’s finest wines, wines fit for a king, if you will.”
This latest coup for Paracombe Sauvignon Blanc adds to a history of success for the label, with its 1997 vintage winning the trophy for the Best Sauvignon Blanc at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show and the 2012 vintage awarded the Best Still White Wine Under £10 (FOB Export Price) in the prestigious SIAL Best Buy Competition in Shanghai, China.
Paracombe Wines products have been sold in Sweden for 10 years, with agents Johan Lidby Vinhandel representing Paracombe and placing the smaller family-owned wines in restaurants and bars. Four Paracombe wines, the Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz Viognier and Cabernet Franc are also available for sale in the top retail outlets operated by the Government-owned Systembolaget.
