The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will host the Stage III Other Instruments final of the prestigious ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards on Friday 24 June, 7.30pm at the Adelaide Town Hall.
Conducted by ASO Chief Conductor Arvo Volmer, the concert will see some of the nation’s finest young musicians perform their chosen piece for a panel of judges and live audience. The winner will receive a cash prize and compete against the winners of the String and Keyboard categories in the Grand Final to be held later this year.
The concert will showcase a contemporary repertoire, featuring an array of works by 20th Century composers.
“We continue to foster young talent and every year are proud to be part of the Young Performers Awards,” said ASO Chief Executive Barbara George.
“We always hope that young South Australians do well and have the opportunity to play with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. It’s exciting to play role in the beginning of someone’s career.”
Adelaide percussionist, Andrew Wiering, who will perform the Lauda Concertata by Akira Ifukube, is the last remaining South Australian in the national competition and says he is looking forward to the opportunity to perform with the ASO.
“It is no wonder that Ifukube, who is best known for his numerous Godzilla scores, scored more than 250 films in his lifetime. His concert music is very cinematic – driving rhythms and heavy brass chords are contrasted by haunting string melodies. The piece is beautifully crafted,” Wiering said.
“The marimba part utilises the whole range of the instrument, from the rich bass tones in the introduction and the harp-like middle register in the beautiful slow movement, to the fast rhythmic figures at the top of the marimba’s range.”
Tickets for this final are $5 and can be purchased from the ASO Box Office, 91 Hindley St, Adelaide during office hours (no phone reservations). The concert will also be broadcast live on ABC Classical FM.
