AC Arts Graduate is Adelaide Critics’ Choice

TAFE SA Adelaide College of the Arts (AC Arts) acting graduate Charles Sanders has been nominated for the 2011 Adelaide Critics Circle Awards to be held on 5 December at The Arts Theatre.

Mr Sanders who graduated from the Bachelor of Arts (Acting) in 2010 has been nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year for his role as Artistic Director of Early Worx, an Adelaide‐based theatre company which creates work involving young and emerging performers.

On being nominated by the Adelaide Critics Circle Awards, Mr Sanders said: “It's a wonderful feeling to be recognised, in the form of this nomination, but a little strange. For me the nomination says more about the wonderful artists who trusted me enough to come on the ride with me this year, and to the work they've created.”

For Mr Sanders the idea of Early Worx grew out of a series of conversations with Dushyant Kumar, co‐ ordinator of Higher Ground Inc. in late 2010.

“We wanted to create a perpetual stepping stone company for graduates and other emerging artists, and Higher Ground kindly offered us a space in which we could do that ‐ and keep our costs down, which is integral in the arts!” Mr Sanders said.

The role of Artistic Director of Early Worx keeps Mr Sanders very busy from creating the season to working with various actors, musicians and directors to bring the shows to life.

During his study at AC Arts, Mr Sanders thrived on the encounters with other artists ‐ from lecturers to guest lecturers, directors, professional actors and fellow students ‐ who all had their own methodology to acting.

“At AC Arts there's no hierarchy of ideas, or 'this is how we do it here and no other way is valid', the training is a constant conversation about the multifarious hows, whys and wherefores and which of them is going to work for each individual student,” Mr Sanders said.

AC Arts Creative Director Christie Anthoney couldn’t be more proud of Mr Sanders who she said was always a self‐driven, highly motivated and talented student.

“Adelaide College of the Arts is proud to have contributed to his professional career and congratulate him on his nomination. Get ready to get used to hearing the name Charles Sanders…he’s on to something,” Ms Anthoney said.
