AC Arts Student Lands Acting Role in ‘Three Sisters’

TAFE SA Adelaide College of the Arts (AC Arts) third year acting student Kate Cheel will take to the stage with the State Theatre Company from 5 ‐ 28 August, playing the role of Irina in Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters.

Still in her third year of the Advanced Diploma of Arts (Acting), Kate is part of an elite few students to be cast in a leading role with the State Theatre Company.

“I was very aware that students are rarely cast and I thought it was unlikely they would even audition me, but I had nothing to lose in letting them know who I was and that I was interested,” Kate said.

After an initial knock back, Kate received an email from the State Theatre Company saying they had changed their mind and wanted to book her for an audition.

She auditioned, didn’t get that part but did get another audition for Irina in Three Sisters.

For Kate, Three Sisters is a beautiful and painfully honest play that is able to really capture life in both its commonality and commotion.

Kate’s character Irina goes on an extraordinary emotional journey throughout the play and she emerges at the end almost an entirely different person.

“I love challenge of such an extreme emotional and intellectual transformation and having to really examine those ‘life‐changing’ moments that will inform her (Irina’s) future self,” said Kate.

Kate said she is grateful for the opportunity to work with a leading national theatre company like the State Theatre Company.

“Any experience with them will only enrich my growth as an actor and help in building my career.”

“Having the opportunity to work with Adam Cook and a cast of professional actors has really consolidated for me what I have been studying in my course. I feel privileged to watch the casts’ high level technique and craft at work.”

Kate enjoys studying at AC Arts because of the wide group she is able to mix with and learn from.

“Being a multidisciplinary arts college, AC Arts allows me to feel part of a greater artistic community which is very inspiring and exciting.”

Kate loves her daily journey upstairs to the third floor (of the AC Arts campus) seeing new displays of student work: from instalment pieces by the visual art students to model displays from set design and elaborate costumes from the wardrobe department.

Juggling her study and four productions at AC Arts with her role in Three Sisters, Kate hopes with any luck she’ll have a career this busy after her graduation at the end of the year.
