As a Henley local, I’ve been lucky enough to had more than a few meals at beachside favourite Acacia. The tiny cafe/restaurant packs a punch when it comes to dining with a difference, and while their day crowd have been traditionally focused on coffees and brunch, it’s their night time transformation that’s really special. And now, during these crazy times, they’re delivering their evening experience to you.
Before Coronavirus and all of the new restrictions were put in place, Acacia’s wine dinners were something of a foodie must-do experience. Tiny tables would be filled with just the right balance of curated wines, freshly baked bread and salted butter, while dish after dish of unexpected gourmet delights would be presented in front of you.
You’d always start starving, and as each carefully portioned out course would arrive, you’d judge too early about how little food you’d be consuming over the night, and then eat your words, as dish after dish of deliciousness actually filled you up to perfection.
Now you can enjoy these dinners at home, with the launch of their new tasting menu – to go.
Seven delightful courses can either be picked up, or will be delivered to your door, all pre-cooked and plated up, with the exception of the main course, which we needed to heat in the oven, and then layer on a plate for optimum wow factor. So simple, even I could manage it. I’m sure the menu will continuously evolve, but one thing is for sure – they’re making this fool proof.
Here’s what our menu included:
- Sourdough for two, cultured butter (OMG THE BUTTER WAS AMAZING)
- Tuna, lettuce, chicken wing garum and cauliflower vinegar emulsion, cured yolk
- Chicken liver parfait donut (strange combo but it definitely worked)
- Panko Katsu glazed pork belly, preserved plum
- Persimmon, expresso Shoyu, Tahini yoghurt, Furukake
- MAIN: Pressed chicken, mushroom fried rice, roast onion shavings
- DESSERT: Sweet corn tres leche, cloud cream, last year’s fermented berries (again, not what we’d expect for dessert but it was divine!)
And the end result? Well, it was honestly like we were dining in a restaurant. The food was spectacular, we felt super fancy, and while the courses all looked tiny at the start, by the end of the meal, we were totally stuffed. And content.
It was honestly the best thing I’d eaten in weeks, and made date night feel like a special occasion, rather than us just eating ‘take away’.
If you’re after some wow factor in your night, Acacia will be serving this option up every Saturday night and is $130 for two.
Acacia is located at 3/269 Seaview Road Henley Beach.
