Adelaide Cabaret Festival Review: Kathy Najimy – Lift Up Your Skirt

The show opens with clips from her many and various films and TV shows being projected on a screen, and it reminds us what a talented funny and prolific performer Kathy Najimy is.

When the lady herself appears she reminds us that she is not going to sing! Kathy Najimy is easy to listen to, she beguiles the audience with how she met her idol, Bette Midler, when she was a teenager, how she ‘stalked’ her idol, became obsessed and then found herself working with her as her sister on the film Hocus Pocus.

The audience find themselves mesmerised by the tales of Najimy’s family, her upbringing in a traditional Lebanese household, her respect for her mother and grandmother, and her many friends. Kathy Najimy is a strong, outspoken advocate for human rights and she talks about the many injustices she sees and feels but it never feels like preaching or lecturing. She gives amusing anecdotes and relates stories that give us all reason to consider our thoughts and feelings on subjects we avoid.

Her last story was concerning a young girl and her mother, looking for some advice to help the girl reach her potential. Kathy said she wasn’t sure she could help, wasn’t sure she had reached her own potential. She discussed how we are prepared to be daring with the things we are comfortable with, like she is always willing to lift her top – she quite likes her boobs – but she hates her thighs, so the really daring thing to do is – lift up your skirt.

Great person, great show. If anything, I am a bigger fan than ever!
