The Adelaide 36ers have announced a significant shift in their coaching lineup as Scott Ninnis is released from his position as Head Coach, effective immediately. This decision comes despite Ninnis having signed a two-year extension on February 22, 2024, which will now prematurely end.
Ninnis’s tenure as head coach began last year following the departure of former coach CJ Bruton, who left the role by mutual agreement. At the time of his appointment, Ninnis was serving as an assistant coach and was elevated to interim head coach for the remaining part of the NBL24 season.
The decision to appoint Ninnis was initially seen as a strategic move, considering his deep history with the club. Ninnis is a noted Club Hall of Fame figure who had notable successes both as a player and coach. His playing career was distinguished by three NBL championships, two with the 36ers in 1986 and 1998, and one with the South East Melbourne Magic in 1992. During his initial coaching stints, he was part of the coaching crew when the 36ers clinched the NBL championships in the 1998-99 and 2001-02 seasons. Upon his return to the 36ers’ coaching staff in 2023, he took up the role of assistant coach before stepping into the head coach position.
Mike Wells has been named as the new Head Coach for the forthcoming NBL25 season. The club is yet to disclose further details about the new appointment and the future role of Ninnis within the organization. An official statement regarding the developments and the potential assignments for Ninnis within the club is expected to be released soon.
