Adelaide Airport is set to begin construction on a new taxiway, which will require periodic runway closures during curfew hours. This means that residents living near the airport may hear more aircraft noise than usual, as curfew-exempt aircraft will be using the cross runway (Runway 12/30) while the main runway is closed.
The first closure of the main runway (Runway 05/23) is scheduled from Wednesday 20th November until Friday 6th December between 11pm and 6am. During these hours, curfew-exempt aircraft will use the cross runway (Runway 12/30) while the main runway is closed. If you live to the southeast or northwest of Adelaide Airport, you may notice an increase in aircraft movements.
This is the second time this year that the airport has had to close its main runway for essential maintenance works. The first closure occurred from Thursday 23rd May to early August 2024, and also resulted in increased night time aircraft noise for residents living near the airport.
The new taxiway is being built to improve the efficiency of aircraft movements at the airport. It is expected to be completed by early 2025.
In a statement, Adelaide Airport apologised for any inconvenience caused by the night works.
“We understand that these works may be disruptive to residents living near the airport,” the statement said. “We are committed to minimising the impact of these works as much as possible.”
The airport also said that it was working to ensure that all curfew-exempt flights were kept to a minimum.
“We are working with our airline partners to ensure that only essential flights operate during curfew hours,” the statement said.
