More than 100 films later and after countless hours of emotionally-charged viewing, 10 lucky young people have been chosen as winners of the BackMeUp national anti-cyberbullying film competition.
The 14-17 year olds from across Australia will now attend an all-expenses paid one week film making course at NIDA in Sydney where they’ll create a 30 second TV advertisement to educate young people how to take action to help a friend or someone they see being cyberbullied.
Commission spokesperson on cyberbullying, Dr Helen Szoke, has congratulated the winners.
“These young people have shown a creativity, wisdom and sensitivity beyond their years in coming up with short two minute films that demonstrate the importance and the power of not just standing by but standing up to cyberbullying.
“The films are of exceptionally high quality, and are a powerful reminder of what young people can achieve when they are inspired by an issue,” Dr Szoke said.

Dr Szoke also congratulated all BackMeUp campaigners and encouraged them to take the BackMeUp message into their daily lives at home, school, on the bus or in the playground.
