The Australia Day long weekend is over, which means another Hottest 100 Countdown has come and gone and many of us are left piecing together the weekend. Even if you weren’t happy with the number 1 song (but really, is anyone ever really happy with it?) it’s safe to say that the Australian music scene turned it up to compete with the big boys during 2013, including Adelaide girl Tkay Maidza.
Starting out on Triple J Unearthed, Tkay Maidza began to make waves around Australia with her room-shakin’ banger, Brontosaurus (feat. Badcop) as it was picked up on regular rotation – something that most Australian artists dream about. If you weren’t horrendously hungover yesterday you might have caught the Triple J 200-101 Countdown, which counts down the songs that missed the top spots on Sunday and featured an awesome surprise. With a whopping 1.49 million votes counted for the world’s biggest music democracy, Maidza made it in at 148 during the Triple J 200-101 Countdown, and also made it in at number 24 on the Triple J Unearthed’s Top 50 Most Played Artists of 2013. In a countdown dominated by international acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Lorde (even though we try to claim her) and HAIM, I think we can predict Tkay will be back in 2014 with even more infectious tunes that’ll make you want to stomp your feet (like a Brontosaurus) – and to that I say ‘heaps good’!
Make sure you keep up to date with Tkay Maidza’s Facebook page here to find out where you can catch her live in the coming months.
