Adelaide Baroque has announced its 2021 season of four Orchestral Series concerts and five Baroque Explorations chamber concerts.
Announcing the program, Chair of Adelaide Baroque, Lynton Rivers said, ‘We are delighted to be back presenting live concerts for 2021 with a broad offering of orchestral and chamber programs covering composers from Henry Purcell, bohemian master Jan Dismas Zelenka, George Frideric Handel and JS Bach’.
Adelaide Baroque’s first Orchestral Concert for 2021 entitled The Art of Musick highlights the genius of Henry Purcell with chamber works for voices and works from his extensive music for the theatre. The concert will be performed on Saturday 13 March at 7.30pm in The Adelaide Town Hall and features soloists Max Riebl – counter tenor, Timothy Reynolds – tenor and Reader Anna Steen. The program was curated by Dr Graham Strahle and Lynton Rivers.
Henry Purcell was hugely prolific in his short life of just 36 years. Living through the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London as a young boy, his composing career spanned a tempestuous era in English history. This program draws on the diary of Samuel Pepys and other sources and is read in the voice of Henry’s wife Frances. A poignant work in memory of Purcell by his teacher John Blow is included in the program.
Bohemian Baroque is the second Orchestral Concert in the 2021 series and explores the music of one of the greatest Bohemian musicians and composers of all time, Jan Dismas Zelenka. The concert will be performed on Saturday 22 May at 7.30pm in Elder Hall and features soloist Robert Macfarlane – tenor. Dr Jan Stockigt, acknowledged as the world’s pre-eminent Zelenka scholar, and author of Jan Dismas Zelenka: A Bohemian Musician at the Court of Dresden, has curated the program and will give a preconcert talk at 6.30pm. This program is devoted entirely to the music of Zelenka and includes three Australian premieres.
The third Orchestral Series Concert entitled Handel’s London shines the spotlight on German-born Handel’s role in English cultural and musical life and will be performed on Saturday 21 August at 7.30pm in Elder Hall.
Performing Handel’s London are soloists Timothy Reynolds – tenor, David Greco – baritone with the program curated by Rob Nairn. German composer George Frideric Handel lived in London for most of his career. Aged only 27 when he moved to England, Handel would be at the centre of musical activity in London for the next 40 years. This concert also includes one of Handel’s most beloved masterworks, the first suite of the Water Music, performed in 1717 as a fitting response to King George’s request for a concert on the River Thames.
Adelaide Baroque’s fourth and final Orchestral Concert for 2021entitled, Cathedral Bach II Passion and Peace: Cities of Music – Leipzig to Adelaide, celebrates the 300th anniversary of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti with a performance of the iconic sixth concerto. Cathedral Bach II will be performed on Saturday 13 November at 7.30pm in St Peter’s Cathedral featuring soloists David Greco – baritone, Ben Dollman – violin, Simone Slattery – violin in a program curated by Rob Nairn. The works in this program were written mostly during Bach’s time in Leipzig, (known as the city of Music) and we are delighted to perform them here in Adelaide, Australia’s own UNESCO City of Music.
