An Adelaide bartender may reign supreme in a competitive cocktail competition!

Grace Rawlins of Memphis Slim’s House of Blues is one of 10 Australian finalists announced in the international Patron Perfectionists Cocktail Competition.

The competition spans across 20 countries, with a national finalist selected from each, and SA is still in the running for Australia thanks to Rawlins and Memphis Slim’s.

This year’s competition saw bartenders challenged to develop their creations from an ingredients list that was easily accessible for fans to recreate recipes at home to accommodate changing social restrictions. The top 10 bartenders will now move forward to take part in a national final judged by a panel of three Australian industry leaders including the owner of Coretto, Kurtis Bosley, the former general manager of MomoFuku Seiōbo, Kylie Javier Ashton, and the founder of boothby drinks, Sam Bygrave.

Ongoing restrictions to social conditions due to COVID-19 will see the Australian final conducted in line with relevant health advice, virtually broadcast globally on the 27th of September via the Patrón Perfectionists Facebook page.

The Australian winner will then get flown to Hacienda Patron in Mexico (as part of a $10,000 trip!) to compete against the other countries’ winners. If they win the entire competition, they will become a Patron ambassador in some capacity, which can lead to a career development for many.

The competition has been running for six years, and Australia has never won, so hopefully this year is our year! But either way, the success of this South Aussie contestant highlights Adelaide as a massive player in the national hospitality scene, undoubtedly contributing to the standard Australia is famed for internationally.

In case you haven’t been, Rawlins’ resident bar, Memphis Slim’s House of Blues, is a semi-new addition to Gilbert Place. The bar is a Chicago-inspired a “cocktail den” with pool tables and dart boards to entertain patrons. True to the bar’s name, there is live bluesy music every weekend.
