Adelaide Born Fashion Designer Lands Emmy Nomination

After making a name for himself globally with some of the biggest superstars in the world, Perry Meek continues to kick some major goals.

Adelaide has a slew of international success stories under its belt, many of which have gone under the radar. While we’re encased in our battle for a helipad (come on seriously, why don’t we have one yet?) and other insular issues, there’s Adelaide-born heroes, out there conquering the world.

While there’s plenty of successful business people kicking goals, it tends to be those in the glamourous world of entertainment that occasionally catch our eye. Sia, Orianthi, Guy Sebastian, Anthony Lapaglia, Teresa Palmer and John Noble are notably from South Australia, as well as fashion designers Paul Vasileff (Paolo Sebastian) and George & Harry (George Gross & Harry Who).

Blending the best of both worlds is former Adelaide High School student Perry Meek, who has achieved incredible success in the US, serving as a costume designer at the Haus of Gaga.

Calm your inner fan girl. Yes, Perry Meek is one of the creative geniuses making Lady Gaga’s costumes. As a former champion ice skater, Meek spent years working on his own costumes for competitions, and his skills haven’t gone unnoticed.

He’s also designed outfits for Paula Abdul, Cher, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Toni Braxton, Janet Jackson and even the Spice Girls in 2008. He’s even designed outfits for the dancers at the Superbowl!

Meek’s costumes have also been showcased on RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as on red carpets, music videos and more.

It’s Meek’s incredible work on Lady Gaga’s costumes for RuPaul’s Drag Race “Oh. My. Gaga!”; VH1, that earned him an Emmy nomination last week, and if you check out the outfit below, you’ll understand why. It’s in the category of Outstanding Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming.

Perry Meek is up against a range of talented costume designers from shows like Dancing with the Stars and Saturday Night Live, but we’ve all got our fingers crossed for this homegrown hero.

The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on September 17th, 2017.
