Adelaide City Council Releases Huge Collection of e-Books and e-Audio Books

Adelaide City Council has released a huge collection of e-books and e-audio books – making it even easier to get your nose into a good book!

Launched at the State Library last night, the new digital range of over 10,000 items includes all-time classics, new releases, non-fiction and bestsellers.

The collection can be accessed for free from the library website at www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/ebooks. Members can search for books, borrow them online and then download to their PC, with the option of transferring the book to their e-reading device.   They can also download directly to their phone or tablet using a free App.  It’s compatible with most smart phones including iPhone, Android, Windows and Blackberry as well as tablet devices such as the iPad and Samsung Galaxy

“It’s the largest range of free e-books in South Australia and it will be topped up with new items each month,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

“And best of all – you don’t have to worry about overdue fees.  Once the due date arrives the book automatically returns itself!”

“It’s just one way Council is striving to meet the changing needs of our members and responding to new library trends.”

It follows the release of the LibAnywhere App in May, which gives users remote access to the entire library catalogue as well as a recent trial of e-readers with Council’s homebound clients, which has been hailed a great success.

Acclaimed Australian author Peter Goldsworthy, who also spoke at the launch, has released some of his novels as e-books.

“e-reader platforms such as the iPad makes reading or listening to books a whole lot easier,” said Dr Goldsworthy.

“Being able to increase font size, touch the screen and use the audio function means people with mobility and/or sight impairments are able to enjoy the world of literature.”

Some devices also allow the reader to add their own notes, scribble, highlight words and even ‘dog-ear’ pages without actually damaging the book.

To access the e-books, you will need to be an ACC library member. It’s quick and easy to join and is open to all residents to South Australia as well as visitors and tourists to the city. Submit your application online via http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/library/join-the-library.html and then head into one of the four ACC libraries of your choice to finalise your registration.
